Mods, move this is necessary,
Report from my Dad as of 10pm last night.
Kingsville has rec'd about 300 Katrina evacuees, most are middle aged, various Cajun, Black some Hispanic.
They were well behaved and as of yesterday the kids were signed up and going to school Monday. Many of the parents had already started looking for jobs and most of the folks he talked to were not interested in going back to NO.
Initally his group was setting up sleeping stuff for 200 or so and as the busses pulled up they were told it was more like 300+
they were putting up cots as the folks were processed in.
Many on the nurses were already offered jobs in Corpus Christi and Kingsville hospitals. The hospitals in that area are always looking for nurses so that was a good match.
the folks were a gamut of construction/oil and gas workers so they may be in a good spot.
He said that the folks were well behaved and the volunteers were working really well getting them set. So were literally shell shocked and looking a bit blank. They were happy to be off the busses and sitting still.
A few were off to Walmart to get fishing licenses and trying out the Laguna Madre fishing. (Me, if I was running from a flood that made it look like God lied to Noah I would *not* be interested in fishing) Cajuns?
Dad is still on call for security on the site.
Volunteers have made up packs of clothes etc for the folks some of who were in the stuff they were wearing when the water started rising.
One guy came in in shorts, tee shirt and sneakers and all he asked for was a shower. When he got out in a robe he just asked for his clothes back and was pointed at a cot his clothes were washed and dried and under them was a suit/underwear, shirt, shoes and etc so he would be able to go out and interview with out looking like a bum.
Like I said, if these folks find jobs and like the climate (hurricanes hit there too but Padre Island absorbs a lot of the energy) they may have no reason to go back to NO.
