it is starting to get warm again, and since this will be my first summer ccw'ing, i thought i would ask this. is carrying spare ammo going to be ok in the summer? parked in direct sunlight all day, closed up, no ventilation? will the ammo (and spare clip) be ok in all this heat, or should i take it out and only carry what i want for spare ammo on me? it would be either 380, or 45acp ammo. or both:evil:

hum i have a case of 30-06 ammo that i carry in the trunk of my car from cmp and its too heavy to lift out so it stays there and i shoot from it when i go shooting. Has not exploded yet... I think your fine

Your ammo will be fine in your car so long as you don't let it get wet - that includes condensate.

As a precaution, I would rotate any ammo kept in the car on a seasonal basis.

Long exposure to high temperatures (we're talking years) could eventually degrade the gunpowder and primers, as heat usually degrades any organic compound. A few months in the glove box will cause no noticeable/measurable degradation.

Standing by for the usual unsubstantiated remarks about how ammo allegedly "breaks down" from vibration in a moving vehicle.

Ha, everybody knows it breaks down in the car because of the thumping bass. ;)

We never had this problem when cars only came with an AM radio and one speaker. ;) ;)

While heat will affect the pressure curve and peak pressure and all...as long as it isn't left in the full, direct sunlight and fired when it's at peak temperature...it'll be fine. Stick it under a seat.

Note that .22 rimfire ammunition may be affected by heat due to the waxy lube that covers the bullet should it soften enough to contaminate the powder. The result of that, however...is usually a dud or a squib instead of a kaboom.

JohnBT,
Nailed it! *lol*

Caution:

Do pay attention to local regulations and jurisdictions.

Ammo, even just loose ammo under the seat might get some into trouble depending on rules, regs, jurisdictions and applicable laws.

Now just entering a Military or Gov't facility, also some campuses of corporations and schools.

Mexico is a given "no-no".

you are in MI, no way it will get hot enough to cook off unless its on fire...

i carried stuff year round in my car in FL with no problems, and that included .22lr

If it can bounce around in a HMMWV in mid-east temperatures, you should be fine in the lower 48 :D

.... although ... you might have something that isn't up to "milspec" that is affected by less extreme temperatures .... Does ATSM have ammo standards?
