I posted this on another forum and I think its important here too. I think it might get read a lot and not anwered much, but think about it a bit.

I was looking at the reloading bench pictures and it ocurred to me that a lot of reloaders have a lot of powder stored in the house, or in a room in the house.
Do any members here use either a bunker or a reloading room that is not attatched to, or in the house?

It might interest you to know that many (most) insurance companies won't cover fire damage that is "compounded " by gunpowders and loaded cartridges being stored inside the living structure.

Ours isn't attatched to the house and I'd probably not have thought of it except for my father's insurance broker asking about it last renewal.

My reloading room is not attached to the house. It is in a 16 x 20 building in the back yard. It is damp in my area but I just keep the powder containers closed tightly and don't worry about them too much. Primers are kept in a ammo can with a good seal and some dessicant added to keep them dry.

I have a shed in my back yard and keep my powder in a sealed container there (along with a package of dessicant). I have another sealed plastic container with my primers (also with package of dessicant) there also. I do keep some powder in my basement, however, in an old (no longer used) vertical freezer with no latch (so it can open if the pressure builds). Of course, dessicant there as well (even though I think as long as the container is sealed it's probably okay). My two cents...

I keep my powder in an inside closet to avoid moisture issues in Florida; then again, I don't have a ton of it either....maybe 10 pounds.......it is not an explosive........you probably have as many flammable cleaners, gas cans etc., in your home

My reloading bench and component storage is in a heated/cooled shop in an outbuilding about 75 feet from the house. Most of my ammunition stash is also stored in the shop area.

Not an insurance issue for me but a practical fire issue - I just don't want that stuff in the basement.

Like oneounceload, I'm also in Florida. And I keep my powder where there's air conditioning. If I'm comfy in a room then the powder will be as well.
