Greetings all,

Does anyone here have any experience with the Kel-Tec SU-16 (exact model number irrelevant, as long as it's legal in California).

I fully intend to purchase an AR-15 and AK-47 variant once I get out of the PRK, but for the time being, my SKS and a SU-16 are the "scariest" EBRs (and the SKS isn't even black!) that I can own.

The SU-16 appealed to me, as I could use standard AR-15/M16 magazines (the 10-rounders are available in great profusion here at gun shows, both the USGI ones and Kel-Tec). When I move out of state, the rifle also accepts the standard 30-round mags as well. It's chambered in .223, seems well-balanced, comfortable, and easy to operate. Alas, the manual of arms is different than the M4 I carried in the army, but I suppose I'll adapt.

Any comments, praise, or concerns about this particular rifle? Anything I should look out for in a particular model that may cause problems?

Cheers!

The SU-16 seems like a good little rifle and has been praised by many for simplicity and handling. Gunblast has a very fair review that is worth reading.

As far as the different models, I would suggest the SU-16B or the SU-16CA as they have better open sights than the "Alpha" model.

Since you haven't stated what you want to use the rifle for I feel slightly obligated to suggest the SKS for its overall utility. The SKS is perhaps the most overbuilt, durable, reliable, and practical carbine ever built. Plus, there are many many aftermarket parts for the SKS rifle, including various synthetic stocks for the "EBR" look.

Excellent advice.

Mostly just for plinking, and because it's a not-quite-evil-enough EBR that is essentially an AR-15. I'm very familiar with the bolt, cleaning, etc. of the AR, and this is as close as I can get in California. :cuss:

I already have an SKS, and will be purchasing many more indeed. See the thread "SKS Pictures..." in this particular category for a few pictures of said rifle.

I'm left-handed, so the mock-folder stock doesn't fit right -- a nub for a righties thumb on the pistol grip digs into my left palm. The Monte Carlo and other such stocks just look rather silly on the SKS. I like the highly-shined wood stock that I have on there now. :)

I'd like to get an SU-16 one day.

I've always thought it strange that with all the various "TEOTWAWKI and you can only have one rifle, which would it be..." type threads, the SU-16 is rarely, if ever mentioned.

I'm in Kali and just bought the SU16CA. I'm in the 10 day wait right now. It's a handy little package. I just hope it shoots better than my mini.

I love my SU-16 Alpha! Shoots great, accurate enough, and pretty darn lightweight.
I keep thinking about buying a Bravo or CA version, but then again I like the long
barrel and the sights are good enough for me; besides, I currently have a red dot
sight on the rail.

What other rifle can you get in California that uses AR-15 mags?

The receiver is marked .223 Rem, but Kel-Tec's website uses .223 and 5.56mm interchangeably. I've used both cartridges with no ill effects.

Lol, sorry I guess I missed that part.... I thought it was one of those "compare/contrast" threads.

I posted a video of someone shooting an SU-16 a while back, you can check them out HERE

Good Luck!

I bought the SU-16A last November. Liked it so much that I just bought a new CA model. I wanted it before Calif decides it should be on the AW list. I like the shorter barrel, parkerized finish and AR type front sight over the gas tube. I added a muzzle brake (for looks only) and the new compact forend. It's as close as I'll ever get to an AR in Calif. Both my SUs shoot very well and consistent at 100 yards, one with an EoTech and the other with a Cheap 6x scope (I have not tried anything beyond 100 yds). I've used four different brand/capacity mags with no problems. Kel-Tec customer service is tops. They respond to emails quickly and the rifle is warranteed for life. Their web site says .223/5.56, but everyone on all the various forums (including me) use all types of mil spec and commercial ammo. I shoot mostly reloads.
