i live in Riverside california. i am 19 years old, have passed 2 firearm background checks, have not had any fellonies, or mistormidors, have a clean record, and am not barred from buying firearms or ammo due to mental illnesses or other restrictions placed on me. my question is can i buy rifle ammo off the internet and have it legally shiped to my home address, which is not a PO box. california has some steep laws aganist firearms and ammo so any help would be appreciated.

Most online/mail-order companies that sell ammunition require either a copy of your Driver's License to prove that you are 21 or require the carrier (UPS or FedEx) obtain an adult signature upon delivery. State/county/city restrictions may preclude this form of ammunition purchase entirely.

Isn't thier a Cabellas or a place like it in Fresno you could get your ammo at?

Yes and No.

Certain cities/counties in CA have their own restrictions on mail order ammo. My best advice is to check with one of the bigger outfits to see if they will mail ammo to your particular county.

You can buy normal longarm ammo (no tracer, incendiary, armor-piercing, etc. ) over the internet. This may not include .50BMG, but that's not an issue here, right? This is on a state level. Individual counties and/or cities may have more restrictive laws, you're best bet would be to post on the CA section of ar15.com or gunscal.com (actually it would be calguns.net, but they're down due to technical problems).

Be advised that some places will refuse to ship to CA or parts of CA regardless of the laws. Sportsman's Guide and Aim Surplus come to mind.

As far as your age, that depends largely on the seller, the method of shipment (as some mentioned, adult signature), and whether it is exclusive longarm ammo such as .30-06, .223, .30-30, etc. or dual use such as .357mag.

I don't know if it's still there but a friend of mine back when I used to live in that hellhole state used to get his ammo at a Military surplus place in Fresno, no clue if it's still around but it might be Worth a try.

big 5 carries most common calibers, and while few and far between, there are gunstores dotted around california. it may be the only option you have until you turn 21.

I live in Riverside as well

If you have any questions, PM me and I'll shoot you my phone number so we can find out what the problem is with you getting ammo from online. I order ammo all the time from Sportsman's Guide and Gunbroker and have never had a glitch getting it, other than I wasn't home at time of delivery LOL.

Have a great Kenpo day

There are rifles which are not considered to be firearms which you can buy mail order, some of the pre 1899 moisin nagats and Mausers are very nice and are chambered in modern cartridges , but you'll shell out about 350-500 bucks on one and the metalurgy isn't quite as good as some of the later models.

you're better off just buying something locally or dealing with an FFL on importing it into the state.

Just FYI, if you buy a rifle in california and its a Curio & Relic or at least 50 years old, you can buy it face to face with the seller. this includes the yugo SKS's which are fun.

If you want to get a garrand shipped to your door, you can join the CMP and buy one starting around 350, they don't have alot of really good ones left, but a garand is a neat rifle.

One thing you might want to look into before the end of the year is getting an off list lower for an AR15, we can get them now in CA and while it is a bit pricey to build it up, the lower receiver (registered part that may become restricted again) is only about 100-150 bucks. you can build the whole rifle for about 6-700.

Note that you don't need a C&R license to buy old guns face to face, just in the mail or across state lines.

In CA, IIRC, firearms have to be 51 years old to qualify for the state C&R exemption. These older guns can be sold face to face without going through a FFL.

Legally you can buy rifle ammo in california. The only thing that might be a problem is you are 19 and not 21 so some of the companies that sell online might have a policy against selling to people under 21. Contact the seller you plan on buying from to see what their policy is. Aim surplus for example wants ammo buyers to be 21. http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/ammunition_requirements.html Mark

I just wanted to add that any long gun that meets the federal definition of Curio and Relic is able to be bought and sold face to face without dealer involvement. It doesn't necicarily have to be 51 years old. Sometimes the gun can be a newer production (1970's ish) and still qualify, I've seen production dates of 1972 on C&R qualifying CZ52's
