Kids with guns! (Nostalgia)

Check out this site I stumbled across. Watch the old television ads for Johnny Eagle toy guns and the Big Bertha three-barelled cannon (sold in food markets only). These ads are great. Its hard for me to remember now that I acually lived in a time where I could watch a TV ad showing a kid hunting and elephant with a realistic looking toy rifle.

Also the Romper room segment is interesting.

Those were the days. Guns, Spy Gizmos, G.I. Joe, Electric Trains, Rocket kits, Erector sets, Bulldozers, Trucks all macho toys! All sold on Saturday morning cartoons. Back then little boys were supposed to have balls. And not just nerf footballs.

It's a shame that our country has become so wussified.


Anyone besides me remember those Mattel spy guns? One was the Radio that sprang open to become a rifle and the Camera that popped open into a pistol? There was even a toy Pocket Knife that became a pistol.

I wish I still had my Mattel Revolving Rifle. My parents must have spent a fortune on those Greenie Stick-em Caps. I recall finding those little grey bullets it fired that had "vanished" for years and years.

It was GREAT to be a kid in the 1950s and 60s! :D
Almost as much fun as being a teenager in the 1970s! :evil:
 
I found my musket from Disneyland my parents bought in 1975 or so still in good shape. Now, here's the kicker - it has two small holes drilled just forward of the percussion lock, and through childhood experimentaion with firecracker powder and caps, I didscoverd why - THIS THING IS A FUNCTIONAL PERCUSSION LOCK MUSKET! The lock has a spark channel into the barrel, and I caused some sparks to fly out those little holes! Now, wouldn't Micheal Eisner just load his shorts to discover Disneyland sold FUNCTIONAL FIREARMS TO KIDS!?!?!?:D :cool: :p
 
Many of those "percussion" muskets and pistols were designed to fire cork balls powered by caps.

A friend of mine had both the pistol and musket and the Greenie Stick-Em caps would propel a ball about 15-20 feet as I recall although the trajectory was vicious.

Around 1971, I had a spy briefcase toy. There were two pistols and other spy gear inside. One of the pistols could be fired from inside the briefcase by pushing a button on or near the case's handle. It shot a blue plastic projectile (with spring power). I think you could put a paper cap in the projectile so it would go off when it hit the ground.

Ads like that, toys like that and TV/Movies like that are the very reason I'm a gun fanatic today! I wore out many toy guns helping John Wayne kill injuns and krauts.

Those were great fun. I wish I still had all of those toy guns I had.

I loved my old Johnny-7-OMA but was kinda bummed when I got it and found that none of the missles/grenades would shoot over 20 feet.
 
I remember that pocket knife very well, had two of them. I think the best toy gun was an electronic M60 with a belt of ammo that actually moved through the gun. Even bought a few spare belts and got to play rambo a few times.

I had one or two of these back in the 1970s. Naturally, being the budding rifleman at the time and having some understanding of how guns work, I attempted to increase the power of the piece by putting tape over the vent holes. :evil:
 
Gosh I'd love to forget about serious stuff for awhile and play toy guns with you guys.

Come to think about it, those old gun games remind me of some of the political debates on these boards.

"I got you!"

"Did not!"

"Did too!"

"Did not!"
 
I remember with great fondness the lever action Winchester or Colt SAA cap guns. We never killed anyone either and didn't grow up to be mass murderers. However, media violence was either implied or it wasn't glorified as it is today.
 
Here's a good one, when we were kids we had BB gun wars, the streets were loaded with roving bands of kids, but even at the age of 11 or 12 we knew enough about BB guns that only Red Ryder or those 1911 look alike pistols could be use the. Crossman 760 was out because it had to much power, unless you promised that you would only pump it once. No one ever got hurt and it was great fun. If that happened today they would hold meeting about it at city hall over the dangers of kids with BB guns.
 
When I was a kid, one of the neighbor kids had a "toy" bolt action Springfield rifle. We discovered one Forth of july that the barrel was hollow and a lead fishing sinker fit just about perfect and you could pass the fuse through the hole in the sinker and just enough fuse was exposed when the bolt was closed.

Light the fuse and you could send a 25 cal lead bullet about 75 yards with pretty decent energy. :what: :evil:

Those were certainly the best of days! I loved being a kid in the 50's.
