Ten dogs were found shot this week at the old parish courthouse in the community of St. Bernard The remaining four dogs were found at Sebastien Roy Middle School in eastern St. Bernard Parish

:fire: This really burns me up, and I'm not some anti-hunting, anti-trapping, animal rights, tree hugger by any means. It seems 'someone' saw fit to shoot peoples dogs who were left at a school when they evacuated from low-lying St. Bernard parish for hurricane Katrina. CLick on the link for all the details.

The St. Bernard Sheriff's Office denies any involvement, what a shocker. These dogs were in a building, not roaming the streets attacking innocent people. Since they were in a building it would seem obvious to evan an ape with a badge that someone put them in there and in all likelyhood would be coming back to retrieve them.

Personnaly I was working offshore at the time and had to evacuate the boat to Sabine, TX. My wife, who was 6 months pregnant at the time, loaded up our three dogs(including a Rot. mix and a Pit mix) in the truck and evacuated them to TX. We would never have left our dogs to fend for themselves in a school or anywhere else for that matter. I am of the opinion that if you choose to own a dog(or any pet) that animal its well being becomes your responsibility, however if I chose to leave my animal in what I thought to be a safe location I would not expect those who are paid by my tax dolllars to kill it. :cuss:

Dog owner.

However, the particular breed of dog in question, pit bulls, can be dangerous. Or are at least perceived to be by the public at large.

I'd like to think if it was a beagle or a lab they would have let them be.

(don't spoil it for me)

Eddie, welcome to THR. I've been down your way many times (I live near Alexandria), and you have my deepest sympathy for the destruction in that part of our State. Any word on whether you have a home to go back to?

I'm afraid that we'll probably never know who shot those dogs. It may have been law enforcement of some kind, or perhaps those living in the area who were afraid of "pack behavior". I'm afraid your comment about accepting responsibility for your pets is spot on - that means that you don't abandon them in any area where you can't personally look after them, or where you aren't sure that care will be provided for them. If the owners of these dogs simply dumped them at the school, without a caretaker to look after them, and/or without supplies of food and clean water, then the responsibility is on those owners, in the final analysis.

Can't find a break-down of the breeds invovled, but from the pics of the scene apear to be at least on Shepard(or mix), a couple of labs(or mixes), and one about the size of a chihuahua. Even if they were pits they were contained in rooms with notes on the doors explaining that they were in there, they had food and water provided for them, and the school was an evacuation center that alowed dogs and end-up having to be evacuated....
sorry to spoil it for you

WARNING VERY GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING Here is a link to the pics. DON'T LOOK IF YOU HAVE A WEEK STOMACH

Preacherman,

Thanks for the concern. We live in Lafourche Parish and thankfully had only minor damage for both storms. I agree whole heartedly that the owners are largely to blame and I would never put my dogs in that situation, but the school was a shelter and allowed pets, then had to be evacuated, and they were left with food and water. So I can't blame the owners too much if they thought they were evecuating and ended up having to leave their pets at a shelter they had planned to stay at with them.

Really enjoyed your lessons learned thread.

9mm and 00 buck shells found at scene

and apparently some witnesses that LEO's from ST.Bernards entered the building. OneLEO from there already under investigation for the video shootingand the Humane Society etc has done an official complaint. The dog's weren't all pit mixes, evidently a dachsund etc also slain.
The case has been turned over to the Fish & Game dept who told CNN on video that the dogs were blindfolded and they think the owners did it so they wouldn't have to look in their eyes as they killed their pets. Funny thing is the CNN reporter said when they went there originally- and they have video, that there were no blindfolds on ANY dogs, only when Fish?game bubbas got iinvolved in it did the blindfolds appear!!!!
Somebody on the Bubba force there needs to give up their shield and get help...

Would it be inappropriate for me to comment on the irony of the dogs getting shot in St Bernard's Parish? ;)

My take on it is that some of these dogs need to be shot, and unfortunately that means some sick ass who gets off on hurting animals might be the one to do it. Sad.

From this thread it looks like the animals had food and water, but "someone" came in and tortured them to death. There is a blood-stained ***** in this picture. Also, there were no headshots, according to the photographer the shots were to the legs, hips, or abdomen. The shotshells are LE ammunition

These are probably the same deputies who were shooting at refugees trying to escape New Orleans. I think St. Bernards Parish would do better to lock up its psycho LEOs and let the criminals run the place :barf:

Oh really?

I took the effort of registering so i could see the pics.

I'm no expert but it looks to me like a Federal game load, the cheap kind, the typical variety found in Walmart bulk packs, which would be the last thing you would be likely to find in a LEO's shotgun.

If anyone else wants to register over there can you tell me if its my imagination or is that forum populated with some *very* frightening personalities?

can you post photo's

or better links?

it is a pain in the rear to register to yet another forum.
I refuse to look at news articles where you have to suscribe.
what a PITA

I dont blame you. Its a lot of hi-rez images of dogs that have clearly been dead for quite some time in various location of an absolutely filthy school building. There is nothing to indicate who shot them (or really that they were shot, although the position would seem to indicate it to my untrained eye) or why. There is some implied evidence that people had taken shelter in the building for some time (food wrappers, alcohol etc). Thats about it.

Oh yeah and the above displayed "LE shotshell"

*according to a moderator on that forum the shotshell is:

FEDERAL TACTICAL 000 BUCKSHOT
LAW ENFORCEMENT
HIGH ENERGY-LOW RECOIL
AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC
( 8-PELLETS )

Apparently i can buy this in packs of 25 for $8 at walmart now.

Not the kind LEOS's would use?

Really depends on the department funding doesn't it? I'm not aware of a large budget in St. Bernards parish(except for food judging by interview footage).

so a shoestring budget = high dollar supplies v. low cost ones?

I dont really think that i should have to explain on a firearms forum why a police department wouldnt be issuing low recoil bird-shot to its officers regardless of expense.

Here is a hint; it's the same reason they dont issue .22s

Well

I didn't really address that the pic in question may be birdshot and was addressing what I thought was the issue of inexpensive shot shells.
I'm referring to the shell casings in the CNN video etc. marked 00 buck & 9mm shells which don't mean LEO but may indicate them. I also wonder if the cheap birdshot seems to indicate a more sadistic approach as other things in the pics indicate- gut shots to wound not kill etc. and not wanting to use up all the dept issued ammo etc.
There is a video and eyewitnesses of the one LEO shooting dogs, some on the porches of OCCUPIED houses. The investigation into it, the apparent coverup and spin of later adding blindfolds etc.
As in all professions there is a percentage of sickos and this seems to be the case here.

I was speaking of game loads myself, but the point would seem to be mute anyways in light of some better images of the shells coming to light (the CNN video that you refference) which would seem to demonstrate that they might actually be buckshot anyways, despite my initial impression to the contrary. Like i said im not an expert. If they are game shells, then it wasnt LE issued ammunition (note; that doesnt mean it wasnt fired by LEOs), if they turn out to be buckshot its anyone's guess.

There are reports of other incidents of seemingly casual shootings of canines by law enforcement. On its face that is a travesty, and i have a hard time coming up with truly reasonable explanations for it.

Points are moot, not mute. But I have to agree, the evidence for these being "LE rounds" is thin indeed. Damn near everything the depts around here issue can be purchased at a gunshow, gun store, or sometimes even Wal-Mart.

A friend of mine gets issued .40S&W Hydrashok. (Not sure if it is the 165gr low-recoil or 185gr standard stuff.) Easily availible for anyone 21+.

Even the weird stuff cops use like LTL rounds can be purchased online.

I don't think anyone is saying LE ammunition proves it by itself, I've bought LE ammo myself. But LEOs were seen entering the building after the pet owners left and they indisputably shot pets in other cases. The most damning evidence is that state fish and wildlife officers apparently came in later, put blindfolds on the dogs and claimed the owners blindfolded the dogs so they wouldn't have to look in their eyes when they shot them. But of course it was an obvious lie because CNN and others had shot video and taken pictures of the scene before the blindfolds were added.

I'm not cop bashing here but I am saying LA needs to clean house big time.

I returned to my home in Lake Charles but found it beyond immediate repair so I went to my Dad's and I'm staying with them for a while. My wife and kids are still in Arkansas and I'll call for them soon.

Now that the scenario is set up...uncollared/tagged dogs are roaming around our country neighborhoods. My Dad has a pit bull female that showed up and has stayed at his house since the storm has passed. Looks like she rode the storm out unprotected, a few minor cuts and scrapes.

We don't know anything about this dog, or the others roaming around. My wife and kids will be coming in this weekend and we will be staying at my parents' home.

Called the parish and they said they were basically "full" and would not be taking any more animals. The dog(s) need to be relocated to safely allow kids outside. No power/air conditioning means everyone stays outside during the day...with plenty of mosquito spray!

I've debated taking the dog on a ride farther out in the country. I've asked around for the rightful owner and stopped at the few convenience stores that are open to see if anyone is asking about these dogs.

No, we're not considering "putting the dogs down", but we do need a humane and quick solution.

Right and you are going to blind fold your pet before you shoot. Right....like that is right out of star wars!

...Having found you guilty of pooping on the rug you are sentenced to die by firing squad. Sargent would you blind fold the dog for me...

If they were running in a pack they would present a real danger to youngsters if not adults and may well have to be put down. But from what has been described here, I don't think so.

Feed her pet her and name her Katrina, Pits can be great pets especially females.
And dogs will typically protect the people that protect them, it's part of a deal made along time ago

At the original forum, this is the exact conclusion that is being made and this is the conclusion that you are supposed to be drawing. They also get real pissed off if you point out that one of their personal-cult leaders might be wrong about anything.
