First of all this is my first post in this amazing forum. I have been in the back row reading for a few weeks now. Never owned a pistol till about 6 weeks ago but have had shot guns and rifles for years. I also obtained my CCW permit last week. I bought a Kimber Pro Carry 2 in 45 cal. 3 days ago. My question for this pistol and I assume many other types, how long is it advisable to leave hammers cocked with safeties on and clips loaded without damaging the springs under tension? Will the springs ever weaken? I have a bunch of questions so I guess I should start asking when I can't find the answers in other threads. John

Hmmm...

Honestly, I am not sure how long it would take to damage parts from being under tension but it wouldn't matter to me because I go to the range at least once a week to practice.

I would think that it wouldn't damage it under normal use but I wouldn't store the gun away for a long period of time with everything set and loaded and then never touch it.

Since it is your concealed carry weapon and since it sounds like it is the only pistol you own ... do you plan to practice with it regularly? If so, I think you'd be safe from any tension problems.

I do own a Kimber Custom II 5" and I can tell you that in my experience they are flawless! No problems whatsoever!

ENJOY IT! And throw up a pic or two to let us see! :D

Current thinking is that leaving a spring under tension is less wearing than frequent cycling. The mainspring has a lot of reserve and will not be hurt by being left cocked. An 8-round magazine has less reserve than the old military 7-shot which could be left loaded for decades. But my Wilsons always let me know their springs were aging by failing to pick up the slide stop while still feeding well. If you practice regularly, your gun will tell you when it needs new springs.

Till hell freezes over. Springs do not wear out by being compressed. They wear out by flexing, (being used ).

Generally the only springs that you should worry about. guide rod spring and firing pin spring after about 5,000 rounds, I rotate magazines and do not let them stay loaded for mor than 2 week periods, i do change the magazine springs every few years ,preventive maintenance, saves a lot of grief. Enjoy your Kimber they are very habit forming, just got my 6th two weeks ago an Eclipse Custom in 10MM, What a great weapon

Good things to know. I will be shooting a couple times a week year round. Also I have a Ruger LCP in .380 that I will be carrying most of the time. I am a flight instructor for RC airplanes since I retired and the larger pistol seems to bother some people. I can tuck the .380 in my waste band and no one knows it is there. I have a couple pics I will post as soon as I figure out how to down size them. John

In the past 28 years I have owned well over 20 1911s. Due to "financial constraints" I am a serial owner...I cannot afford to own them all at once, but I can keep a few, buy one, sell one, and so on.

The first time I fired my range buddy's Kimber (2004) I couldn't believe how good it made me look. I said "oh, crap, this is going to get expensive". That was a true statement. I have owned eight of them so far. :)

The only thing on my shopping list is a Kimber Eclipse in 10mm.

my kimber pro carry has been great & verry accurate. for mags i use wilson 47d's & 47dc's & novak act's. mine does not always like the mag that came with it. just be careful which mags you use. i was told if you have the aluminum frame you can damage the feed ramp, if you use the wrong magazine follower. welcome to the high road.

Get a pocket holster for the LCP to small to carry IWB . If you can carry their carry a larger pistol. 99% of time a KelTec in pocket.

The LCP does give me some trouble getting it drawn. I can't seem to get a hold of it very fast. I am always looking for something better. Like most places around here the retailers only like you to hold, look and give right back. I wish there where a store that would let you fondle and work out some scenarios with it before the sale.
