I've searched extensively, and haven't found an answer to this problem:

My Custom II (external extractor) is about to go over the berm, due to the FTE problems I continue to have. I shoot every weekend in a local pistol league, and usually shoot at least one IPSC match every month, and I've got better than two thousand rounds through this thing in about 6 months (figure it's broke in yet? ).

It will shoot fine (better than fine; if it wasn't so accurate, I'd have ditched it a while back) for up to 100 rounds sometimes, but sometimes it won't go two mags without failing to extract the case and locking up three times. I have to haul back on the slide just to drop the mag, and then eject the case. It locks up SOLID. I've actually noticed a tendency for it lock up more often right out of the gate, when it's just been cleaned, than when I've dirtied it up on a couple stages.

I'm certain it's not a mag issue, as I've kept track of which mags were being used when it locked up, and out of seven mags, every one of them has locked it up at least once, but none have locked it up consistently. It may be ammo, as I shoot my reloads pretty much exclusively, but that doesn't follow as it will go a while without issue and then just decide to lock up, and I load all my .45 with the same charge, bullet, OAL, and crimp, since the load I run is accurate in all three 1911s I shoot.

I'm ready to send it back to Kimber, but I don't want to be without it for six weeks and have them send it back with "Could not replicate problem" on the tag if there's some way to fix this myself. Is there any way to cure it, o masters of the 1911?

Thanks,

Farnham

What do you mean by "lock up"? is the slide jammed half-way open, the case stuck in the chamber, crunched stovepipe?

As an experiment, i would shoot two or three boxes of factory fmj throuh it and see if the problem continues. That will truley eliminate your handloads from the equation.

it could be that your other .45s have lighter recoil springs and the loads just won't cycle the slide far enough. Or It could be something as simple as a "weak" batch of primers or a humidity problem.

if nothing else, you'll get 40 or 60 brand new pieces of brass to load. ;)

There is a simple fix. Get the slide replaced for one with an internal extractor......free (except shipping one way.) Call Dennis at Kimber's Custom Shop. Kimber has been replacing troublesome external extractor slides with new slides with internal extractors since the beginning of the year.

Kruzr, You beat me to it once again. That's all right though. If you remember, Dennis finally replaced the EE slide on my Kimber Eclipse Pro II with a slide having an external extractor. Apparently and in addition to the Kimber EE being a flawed design, the extractor spring loses strength at about 1000 rounds and exacerbates the issue. 1911tuner looked at this pistol beforehand and advised that the slide being out of spec didn't help matters any. Glad to see you helping out on this forum.
