Well I own a Custom II already...I wanted to try out an entry level colt. It's probably not really a step up or down buying the colt.
 
I never thought I'd ever be saying this in public (long-time Colt fan) ... but, having recently purchased both new Kimbers and new Colt's, both brands' entry-level and top-of-the-line models ... I'll buy a new Kimber over a new Colt product these days, every time. Yes, I know Kimber makes more use of MIM parts, but frankly, I believe Kimber's current level of quality control exceeds Colt's, and you simply get more features on the Kimbers (i.e., night sights, frontstrap checkering, better fit and finish, etc.) for the money.
 
If the Kimber was a pre-series-II, I'd have to really think hard. But since it's a series II pistol, no contest.

I'd get the Colt.


(Just so nobody thinks I'm being a Colt snob, I own a Kimber Ultra Carry, and carry it almost every day. It is my most often carried sidearm. I also own a Colt 1991.)
 
Colt---never been impressed with Kimber 1911's---just something not quite right with em.
 
I own a couple Kimber series II's, and both have performed flawlessly after a combined 9000+ rounds. No malfunctions of any kind whatsoever, even during the break-in period. I shoot both hardballs and hollow points.

Whereas I've owned a Colt and a Springfield that were nothing but trouble. I sold the Colt and returned the Springfield to the dealer.
 
Kimber gives me more for my money. Colt can get you more for resale. I believe you can't go wrong with a used Kimber. My used Kimber Eclipse Target II cost me $669. It has target night sights, all stainless, front strap checkering, and it groups terrific. It hasn't had a hickup in over 2000 rounds. Both of my Kimbers have been flawless, despite what I've read on the forums.:neener:
 
If you have a Kimber Custom II already then I'd build it up. Ambi Safety, night sights, polish the feed ramp add a Match barrel & bushing and adjust the trigger to where you like it.
 
To leave stock I would go for a Kimber in a second, but I voted Colt because it is a classy base on which to build a nice semi-custom. You can have a very personalized gun for under $1400, and best of all, it's a Colt :D

I currently own two Colts (Govt & Commander) & a newly purchased Kimber C2. Love'm all but voted Colt just because I've had them longer.
