I've got a match this coming weekend, does any know where I can get an external extractor for a Kimber Custom CDP II? A small peice of the claw hook broke on my extractor.

Any help appreciated! :(

I know of no aftermarket source for the proprietary gimmick Kimber external extractor. Call them up as soon as they open for business today and beg them to send you a hook by air.

I went to their web site last night and I wasn't impressed. Unless you want to buy a Kimber shirt or hat they didn't have much to offer. Maybe I was at the wrong site, anyway I was gonna call them today...Thanks for the reply!

Well I just got off the phone with a rep named Jamie and he told it's a warranted part. He says he'll ship it today UPS ground and I should have it Thursday. We'll see, the match is Sunday and I would hate to have to throw the bullets down range.

Did you have a phone number for Dennis just in case?

After thousands of external extracted rounds, I've never had issue with my External Extractor in my Stainless II. I guess that some day I will. Maybe I should get a spare in advance.

Kimber went to an external extractor and after 4 different designs they have gone back to an internal one !!

Well I've gotten two e-mails and a phone call from Kimber, I have to admit they are paying attention to me and my broken extractor. They say they will have it to me by Thursday. I will post the event when it happens.

The fellow that called me said that the site posted above was not an official Kimber site, I'm waiting for him to tell me what is was. He said that even though the parts looked right they may not be. As mention above they have gone through several design changes. I would have liked to have had an internal extractor now that IPSC has a single 8 stack catagory. The new rules say your gun has to have an internal extractor. Lucky for me the RO's in my club have poor eye sight! LOL.

I gotta tell ya, so far I'm impressed. We'll see on Thursday!

I just spoke w/ Kimber again about ordering a spare extractor kit and then got into a general discussion about internal vs external extractors. They said that now Kimber has gone back to the internal extractor and I could send them my slide assembly and they would replace the entire slide w/ an internal extractor style. No charge (just S&H)...cool! I can't think of a reason not to take them up on it.

Apparently they designed the external extractor for the California market. The extractor does have a red indicator that sort of shows if a round is in the chamber. That apparently was a requirement of the gun kooks out there. After all was said and done they wouldn't approve the external extractor design so Kimber went back to the old design.

I guess thats the old "give them an inch..." thing.

I'd take them up on the slide change. ;)

Sounds like good customer service.

I got hit in the head by one, does that count?

People here have always wondered what was wrong with me...that must be it! Last year I was at the range and one of the Kimber "wonder-extractors" flew off a fella's pistol and snacked me up aside the head. He came over and asked if I would mind stopping firing so he could pick up the pieces of his pistol. I sold all of my Kimbers with external extractors.

I hope all works out.

If you take them up on the offere I would hope that 'slide assembly' includes barrel, bushing, and link. Please let us know how they treat you.

I have a near new/used Kimber, and while they won't extend their slide replacement to those of us that didn't purchase them new, I'd be hard pressed to do so anyway. My barrel, slide and frame fit/lockup are near perfect. And while I don't quite "need" a bushing wrench to get things apart, the fit of my gun is near as tight as several Bullseye pistols I've handled. Accuracy is better than any Colt I've owned. My Kimber doesn't rattle like my Colts do.

If my external extractor breaks, I'll call them. Until then, I'm happy with shooting to the X ring.

Hey Doc2005 at least Kimber's are accurate! Can't beat a head shot!;)

As for doing the change out, I'm gonna do it after my match on Sunday. If for no other reason I would want to shoot single stack 8 mags in a IPSC future match. That would require an internal extractor. Kimber says it will take about 4 weeks to get the gun back. I'll ask them which parts are changed out. You know I'll post the results.

Thanks to all you guys!

If you have problems with the external extractor, they will indeed change your slide also. You don't have to be the orignal owner so long as you haven't modified the slide.

A follow up. Kimber has offered to replace the entire slide assembly w/ an internal extractor. This past weekend, some of the folks at the match said that they would prefer an external extractor. They said that several manufactures are going to them because they are more reliable.

Any comments on that?

Comment:

Based on Internet reports, the Kimber external extractor is the most troublesome of the lot. Kimber would not be reverting to standard extractors if theirs was not giving enough trouble to cause them unfavorable publicity.

The S&W and S&W PC (different extractor), Caspian, Wilson, and Sigarms external extractors seem to be doing better, but if something DOES go wrong you will be in the same fix as with Kimber... almost totally dependent on the maker for HIS mutant part. A real 1911 extractor can be bought from a number of sources and you can even keep a fitted spare without the gun company treating you like an idiot.

PO and their internal but non-standard extractor falls in the same category.

Take Kimber up on its offer to replace the slide with one that has an internal extractor. This is a no brainer. You'll be going from non-standard to standard, which usually is a wise move.

As for the reliability of external extractors .... Didn't something just happen to give you evidence to the contrary? :)

Kimber Extractor

Tidewater Tom...
Don't know if you're still here... but here goes.
I'm a POST Firearms Instructor in Idaho. Own and regularly shoot a Kimber TLE/RL II. I've heard many negatives regarding those infamous external extractors and never knew what people were talking about.
Until...
About a year ago I had to replace the extractor. My smith had one on hand and took care of the assembly. Now... roughly 800 rounds later... I'm in the crapper again with the Kimber. I have been teaching a swat academy and patrol academy and had a lot of trouble with fail to extract. Type 3 malfunctions are a blast. Hmm.
Though I've become very proficient at clearing the continuous malfunctions, roughly ever ten rounds. I've had it with this pistol. I can't rely my life on something that is going to be a problem.
I've finished teaching the courses with my Colt. Runs like a dream.
So my question... Did Kimber ever replace your slide assembly??? Will they still do it???
Dutch

Dutch1911,
Yes, Kimber will replace your slide still. Call them. You will pay shipping back to them but they will pay the shipping back to you. Tell them you are having nothing but trouble with your external extractor......let them offer to replace the slide.

I spoke with Kimber yesterday they want me to send the entire weapon back. No mention of replacing anything.
Never been in this position before. I must say... as a firearms instructor for POST it's incredibly embarrassing to have to clear type 3 malfunctions every 20 rounds.
Should I call them back??? I'm ready to ship...
any words of wisdom on what to say?

Ship it to them. Enclose a brief letter about the problem. Be sure and mention that you are a POST instructor and use the gun in classes. That may speed things up a bit. Let us know if they put a new slide on the gun. Since they aren't manufacturing the external extractors anymore, that is what they typically do when one comes back.

Thank you for the advice, never encountered something like this before.
I wrote a letter with the pistol. They should have it tomorrow. We'll see where they go with it.
If they replace the extractor again, it'll be for sale.
