I'm getting ready to purchase a "loaded" 1911 (I have a series 70 Colt Gold Cup, but do not want to alter - Beavertail, Hammer, Dovetail sights, etc.)

I've pretty much narrowed my search down to these (2) guns, both in the $750 - $850 price range. Seems the going consensus is that Springers are better made, but the Kimber Gold Match (internal Extractor) may be more more accurate.

Looking for replies on the both of these, which of one would be best for range/shooting sports AND would best compare to the accuracy/function as my Gold Cup.

Thanks All

I think you'll probably be happy with either. I'm biased towards my Gold Match II. I bought it as an alternative to a Colt Gold Cup National Match because at the time it seemed that Colt's QC had gone downhill. I've NEVER been disappointed in it. If you do decide to buy a Kimber though you might want to moderate the amount of time you spend in this forum as they appear (in this forum) to be as evil as an AR15 in California. :)

Have a good one,
Dave

PS - I don't know where you're located, but you might see if there are members nearby that would let you run some ammo through one of each. If you're near Central IL you are welcome to try my gold match. I get a big smile on my face everytime I shoot it.

I'm thinking about that Springfield as well. I've heard good and bad about the Kimbers. Something about MIM (?) parts. Haven't really decided. Not buying on looks as looks will do me no good if it's not a functioning gun and accuarte.

Springfield Armory 1911s have MIM parts also. Its not only on the Kimbers. The Metal Injection Molded (MIM) parts are quite durable also if manufactured correctly. Its just gotten such bad reputation. But SA (except Pro) or Kimber, you're gonna get a MIM filled 1911.

Both 1911s would be a great shooter. Either the Loaded or the Gold Match II.

Each have advantages and disadvantages. The SA doesn't have a firing pin safety like the Schwartz system on the Kimber. It does have the ILS on the Mainspring, but that can easily be swapped out in 30 seconds.

The Kimber, has a better slide to frame fit, and IMO is slightly more accurate. IMO the MIM and Series II problems are so overblown that its like how Glock lovers rave about how great their pistols are. :D

Both have edges sharper than Benchmades, gotta be careful or you can slice skin with the edges of the slide. Yeeeaaooucchhh!!

Get either or both. Go handle them. One will fit better than the other, but either way, cant really go wrong.

My vote, however... goes to the Kimber Gold Match.

I own both Springfield and Kimber and will tell you Kimber is definitely more accurate. But you don't have to get a GM for that accuracy, a plain ole Kimber Custom will suffice nicely.

I'd take the Springer over the Kimber ANYday, even if the slide to frame fit & accuracy may be better on the Kimber.

Main reasons are: the Springfield is likely to be more reliable, Springfield is more likely to take care of your problems better (if you have any), and it has no Schwartz firing pin block. Then lose the ILS MSH, fit an EGW angled bore barrel bushing, recrown the barrel, and give it a trigger job... then you should have a pretty nice target gun.

Better yet, if you can afford it (about $1200), would be a Colt Special Combat Government... they're superb target/competition guns.

Yes, she's wearing a Kimber trigger and Eclipse grips (the two things I do like about Kimbers).

Why not include S&W in your criteria?

Their 1911 is very good. Mine is every bit as accurate as my Kimber Elite, and cost about $200 less. Reliable, too....mine eats everything and has from shot #1. Also, worth mentioning that their customer service is top notch, and my experience with both Kimber and SA has not been nearly as smooth.

I would have to agree with Swingset in that the S&W may trump both SA and Kimber. If you're going to have a Schwartz system and an external extractor in your 1911, S&W is probably your best bet for reliability and customer service if you have problems. Good call, Swingset!

There is no comparasion between the 2. The Kimber GM is a mich better gun and is more accurate than 99% of all shooters. I have an earlier Kimber GM and it's a shame its become a safe queen. For as accurate as it is, it should be shot. Take a 185 or 200 gr lead bullet and put any amount of decent powder below it and you will get 1" groups at 25 yards.
