just realized that kimber recommends changing the recoil spring every 800 rounds. that doesn't seem like much. is this what you guys have been doing? where can you buy these besides kimber? this seems like a week link in their firearms.
1911s with shorter slides like this one do have a shorter recoil spring life; the three-inch ones are even less. Because this gun, IIRC, has a four-inch barrel and not a standard "Commander" 4 1/4" barrel, this spring may be proprietary (i.e., only made by Kimber). Possibly, Wolff Gunsprings may make them.
