I've heard horror stories about trying to remove a sight on a Kimber 1911 and that they use a hydraulic press to install them. I'd like to hear opinions on the best pusher for the job. Specific models like the MGW or a universal type? I say a wild looking universal style on ebay that looked pretty stout. It went for about $129-$130 which isn't much more that a MGW specific for a 1911. Usually a tool designed for a specific job does the work better. Opinions?

brownells sells a sight installation press for around a $119 for front and rear sights, If you want quality sights, simply send you slide to novak or back to kimber to have your sights installed

Well, I knocked out the standard sights on my UCII with a brass punch and a small brass hammer. Installed the replacement set of TruGlo TFOs with the same tooling.

It's been a couple years now, and I seem to recall that you knock them out left to right, and in from right to left (that is to say, the dovetail is tapered). You might want to verify that, because if it is tapered, trying to knock them out through the narrow end could be difficult/destructive.

Of course, sending the slide to Kimber would accomplish the same thing at a minimal cost and with zero risk...

I've got adjustable sights on my Kimber 10mm. I'd like to have the 3 dot sights rather than the plain black. I see that Cylinder & Slide will do this at a reasonable cost. I'm assuming they put the dots on my sights. I'm leaning in that direction. Originally I was also thinking that I might forget to reinstall the firing pin stop but I've ruled that out.

Sight installation

I removed the standard sights and installed Meprolights on my Kimber Pro carry. I carefully used a brass punch with the slide protected by oak blocks in my vise. I did very minor fitting on the new sights with a trianglular file. Carefully center the sights in the slide and shoot to confirm zero. Mark and make minor adjustments to the rear sight. Then apply red loctite around the sights and remove excess. It was not difficult and was rewarding.

Kimber Site Tool

I used a brass punch on my Ultra Carry II but I would not recommend it. I left one darn ding on it. :banghead:

If anything get the MGM the universal is not good at anything and you will end up marring your slide if you are not careful and ussually they have all kind of set screws you have to set up correctly.
A professional gunsmith should be able to do it for less than the cost of the tool and without dents.
I Know a guy who bought a universal to change the sights himself on an HK USP and ended up putting really ugly and heavy dents on it.

About two years ago, I removed the standard sights on my Stainless Ultra Carry with a brass punch and a brass hammer, and replaced them with TruGlo TFOs. No problems whatsoever.

I've been trying to get a set of Trijicons off of another 1911 slide for about a year. They are adjusted too far right and I couldn't move them either way. I was afraid of damaging them, so I did some searching on a couple of forums. The method I found and used was:

1. Make sure you are going in the right direction (remove left-to-right, install right-to-left).
2. Remove set screw, drip in some Kroil or another "creeping oil" into the hole, some on each side of the base, and some at the top of each dovetail. Let stand for a while.
4. Reinsert the screw and tighten it--this moves the sight upward slightly. Drip some more oil and let sit a bit longer (I let it sit overnight).
5. Use brass 1/4" punch with a piece of card stock between the punch and the sight.

Before I re-installed, I got a flat plate, put a sheet of 320 sandpaper on it, put the sight base-down on the sandpaper, and did ten strokes. Rotated it 90 degrees and did 10 more, rotate, repeat, rotate, repeat. Test-fit. Repeat as many times as necessary. Took a while, but I got there.
