O.K. I'm opening myself up to all sorts of comments, but here's my situation: I have a Kimber Ultra Carry II which I bought for a primary carry weapon, but due to an old shoulder injury, I have trouble drawing it from my strong (right) side. I've been carrying a Kel-Tec P32 in a pocket holster, which I have no trouble drawing in a hurry. I would like a little more firepower for a pocket gun though, and I am considering a Kahr PM9. Any thoughts?

Look at the Kahr PM40 for even more firepower than the PM9. A Kel-Tec P3AT will give about 50% more power than the P32 in virtually identical size and weight package.

Kahr PM9/PM40 are quite a bit thicker and heavier than P32/P3AT but much more powerful. My PM40 carries pretty well with an IWB holster clipped inside the top of my boot.

Kahr makes a fine wepon. I've carried a mk9 for a month now and can't complain about anything. Fine 7 yard one hole groups, at 15 yards they are well centered and tight also.

I tried out a PM9 in my pocket, and found it much too blocky (read: thick) for pocket carry. I ended up with a P3AT. I would suggest actually trying out a PM9 in your pocket, remembering to add even a bit more width for a pocket holster, and see how it feels for you.

I have a PM9 and would agree that if you want to pocket carry, you need a pocket holster. Almost all pocket guns require a pocket holster as they shift around in your pocket making presentation difficult. I am quite pleased with the PM9 and find it to be very slim. If you are going to entrust your life to a gun, make sure it is constructed to high standards and is consistently reliable. I don't feel that the Kel Tec line meets those standards.
With regards to 9mm or 40 S&W, that is subjective. In a small gun, especially with an injury, you are probably better off with the 9mm than the 40. You will certainly feel more recoil in the 40 and therefore maybe less accurate and less inclined to practice with it. The Kahr line can and does handle P and P+ ammo.

If you've got a shoulder injury, I don't know if I would suggest a PM40, but I've got a PM9, and I love it.
It carries very well in most jeans in a $10 holster from Uncle Mike's.
In a quality IWB holster, it's even easier to forget about.

Recoil on the PM9 is a non-issue.
From what I've read, PM40 recoil is more of an eye opener.

6+1 rounds of 124gr +P Gold Dots, and I don't feel naked.

I carry a PM9 in my pocket, but only if I'm wearing pants with big, deep pockets. It doesn't work so well with jeans. If it works for you, the PM9 is a great little gun.

Like mini14jac, I also load mine with 124 gr. +p Gold Dots.

If you are comfortable with the Kel Tec line, I'd suggest going with the P3 AT. The .380 is a decent step up from a .32.

Pocket carry depends a lot on your build and manner of dress. A person wearing something like dockers or coveralls could get away with carrying a PM9. I wear jeans that fit, so pocket carry is out of the question without me looking very strange.

The PM9 really shines with IWB carry. You'll hardly notice it is there. I don't know the extent of your injury, but it seems that it is aggravated by the motion of drawing your weapon from a IWB/behind the hip position. Any weapon would pretty much be uncomfortable to draw.

So I'd suggest the P3AT, or go fanny pack and carry whatever you want.

Not after you shot 158gr Hydrashok .357 mag from an 11.5 oz. S&W SC360 Scandium revolver! :)

Seriously the PM40 is not painful to shoot, in a defense gun I want the most bang I can carry and if my hand hurts afterwards, so what!

Many reports from people involved in shootings never remember even hearing the gun go off! so I doubt the recoil will be memorable if the gun is actually needed.

I had no trouble shooing 200 rounds of 180gr FMJ in one session thru my PM40 to break it in.
