Kinda jonesing for a 257 Roberts…

i have a ss syn stocked kimber montana in 257 roberts, and does 2850 fps with a 2x7 compact leupold scope and 115 gr hornady with 44 grs hyb100 that shoots three shot 3/4" groups at 100 yards, and five shots on a quarter at 100 yards. with 47 grs of N-560 it does just about as good. total weight is a tad over six lbs
My Kimber in 257 Roberts will shoot good groups. About quarter size at a 100 yards. I have a Kimber 84 M classic in 7mm08, that will shoot Remington 140 grain corelocks, in one hole. They are amazing little rifles,

Sounds fantastic, hope you find what you are looking for.

I have a hankering for a 250 Savage bolt.
My vision would probably be a Savage Model 10 receiver with a Shilen or Criterion barrel in Blue then mounted into Richards Microfit Walnut stock.

I do have the Savage receiver but it will most likely be barreled in 223 or 6BR Norma as a target rifle.
I have a stevens 200 that is a 223 that I switch into a 250 savage. Just have to change the bolt head, magazine, and barrel. Takes about 30 minutes including setting the head space. 250 savage is my all time favorite antelope and deer cartridge. The barrel came from. Midway and is sub moa with 100gr Hornady interlocks (discontinued) and nosler ballistic tips. Rifle basix sav1 trigger and swift 6x fixed power scope.

My .257 Robts. Is a Rem 722 my Grandfather gave me. It killed a truckload of hill country whitetails over the decades he used it.

It loves the Win and Rem 100 gr sp, it hates the Hornady Light Magnum 117 gr btsp’s. I think the bullets are too long.

Stay safe.

I don't mean to completely de rail your thread, but why is a 25-06 not an option? It's half way available at gunshops near me and online and I don't think I've ever seen a single box of 257 roberts ammo...
I'm just simply thinking about ammo and brass availability for ya. Also you can get a fast twist barrel and shoot the new sleek 130gr class 25cal bullets from Berger and Hornady.

Nostalgia, honestly. I’ve owned both the 25-06 and 257 Roberts. There’s just something inherently cool about the 257 Roberts in a trim bolt action that appeals to me. I like the fact that not many people own one. I guess that’s the same reason I like my 6.5x55s and 250 Savage so much.

Well heck man! You've got a 250 savage and a 6.5 swede (as do I) that doesn't leave a whole Lotta love for a Bob. If you've got the hot running wants for a Bob, and you're already covered as you are, I say you need to haunt the gun shows and auction sites and find a donor action. Then build the rifle you have pictured in your mind. Nothing else will do.

If custom rifle prices hadn't gone crazy, I'd be tempted to have a nice "Bob" sporter put together on a Mauser 98 action. 24" lightweight barrel and a slim fine checkered stock with some nice figure in the butt. But the wood alone could overshoot your b
Mr Adcoach has it right: a M-98 action is the foundation of a very fine .257 Roberts and has been the beginning of some beautiful custom Bobs like this one built around a '09 Argentine action. But like he says, a good piece of wood might overshoot your budget. DSC_0057 (3).JPG DSC_0065 (3).JPG DSC_1196 (3).JPG DSC_1210 (2).JPG

The wood on that is nice enough that it doesn’t matter what cartridge it’s in. That said, 257 Roberts is a good round. I have one but it’s a 12 lb rifle. Recoil is about like a 223. Good for a varmint rifle but a bit heavy for hunting. The 250 Savage can do a lot of the same things but most older ones like mine have a slow twist that limits it a lot. I’m always on the lookout for used rack misfits to fill the lightweight 257 or fast twist 250 gap.
I know any 6mm or 6.5 mm would be a better blank slate choice, but there is a mystique to the 257
