I love 8mm mausers, my 98k is a beat up, ugly, sporterized, rusty, wonderful gun. accurate enough for me, and is very comfortable to shoot. Not to mention is very powerful.

I use it mainly for bear/hog hunting because it's the only rifle I own with iron sights on it and enough power to make me feel ok about coming up on a bear. I have had a heck of a time finding hunting ammo for it (I hate ordering stuff off of the internet), so when I came across some remington core-lokt monday I snatched it up. The stuff was way overpriced at $40 for the box of 20, but it was the only 8mm hunting ammo within reasonable driving distance around here (I'm talking an hour or so). Got it home, tested the new ammo, shot great, hit what I aimed at, so off we went to the woods for the opening day of bear season... Got home after not seeing anything, and went to empty the magazine, lo and behold none of the round nose ammo would feed from the left side of the gun. I had never heard of this problem before, mainly because I had never used round nose ammo in one before.

After lots of thinking, and really hating to throw out a 40 dollar box of ammo, I figured something out. You can stagger the round nose with mil-surp ammo in your magazine so that all the mil-surp is on the left. Feeds great, my first two shots will be hunting ammo, a third shot of mil-surp that I can choose to fire or cycle through, and then another shot of hunting ammo. My magazine holds 5 rounds +1 in the pipe, so I'll have 4 rounds of hunting ammo and only 2 rounds of mil-surp...

I'm sure this is not new, nor is it ideal, but I was just posting for someone else who might be in this situation to have an easy cheap solution. In my state it's legal to hunt with mil-surp (I AM NOT ADVOCATING HUNTING WITH MIL-SURP AMMO) so there will be no issue from the game wardens, but even if there was I'd think you could show him/her your issue with the rounds cycling and they would be understanding. Also, I figure that if I'm on my 3rd shot of 8mm, then I'm in a defensive situation by then and being humane probably won't be the biggest issue in my mind.

I load the mag like this... 1= hunting ammo, 2= mil-surp, 3=hunting ammo, 4=mil-surp, 5=hunting ammo and then one in the pipe of hunting ammo.
