I'd like to get a couple Mil-Surps. Seeing as they are proven reliable designs I figured it'd be nice to have a couple around. I'm looking for the whole package a nice, affordable rifle with "cheap", decent ammo available. I'm figuring something in 8mm or 7.62x54 would be the only ones to really fit the bill. I already have 5.56, 7.62x39 and x51 so those are not needed. Mainly looking at an older bolt action beast. What would you rifle/ammo combination be?

Do you handload? Will ammo availability and price be an issue?

Off the top of the head, Moisin Nagant or 8MM Mauser.

I reload but don't want to for this rifle. Because of that I'm not looking at any of the 6.5x55s or any of the more exotic rounds. I want something with common and cheap ammo.

I'm beginning to think that one should just buy whatever is on the market dirt cheap at the moment, since:

1. We're all on the quest to Get The Whole Set

2. We'll kick ourselves when the rifles that used to fly off the shelves at $75.00 each are going for $275 and we decide that we want one.

Right now, the hot ticket items are various flavors of Mosin-Nagant and the outstanding K-31. K98 Mausers have climbed enough in price that, while they will continue to get more expensive, they can be safely back-burnered, since they're unlikely to double in price over the course of a few months like K31s are in the process of doing. Same with Lee-Enfields. If you're a CMP member, I'd grab whatever they have in stock that you want while the getting is good. They might not run out tomorrow (or, they might), but the prices sure aren't going to drop.

Cheap and a beast? Can't go wrong with either a 91/30 mosin or M44 in 7.62*54 for aroung $70-80. Or a Yugo 8mm mauser for a little over $100. If it was me and I was getting my first C&R again it would have to be a K31, but I'm biased, I have several of the swiss critters running around here.:p

I would buy in this order:
K-31 -10 years from now people will be kicking themselves wishing that they had bought 20 of them when they were $100 a piece, just like swede mausers 10 years ago.
Yugo 24/47
91/30 -in the best condition that you can find
M44 or M38- in the best condition that you can find

Keep your eyes out for some of the following- if you can find one in decent condition for around $100, snap it up:
Any czech made rifle- VZ-24, 98/22, 98/29 (the latter will set you back several hundred $$ though)
People still find Swedes for under $200- not very often anymore, but sometimes a blind squirrel finds a nut.
Turk M38 and M1903 rifles

top priorities:

k-31 and finnish m39 mosin, m1 garand. all outstanding firearms, with limited (except the garand) production numbers. prices will certainly rise in the coming years.

secondary priorities: com-bloc mosins, k98, and enfields. more plentiful, but pretty much dirt cheap nowadays (k98's being on the high side).

then the other various flavors of mausers.

and thats just scratching the surface. there's tokrevs, hakims, m1 carbines, m1903's, etc.

i love mil-surps. :)

These are some top picks:

K-31 Swiss
1911 or 96/11 Swiss
M-39 Finnish
Persian Mauser
South American Mausers (7x57, 7.65 Arg)
Swedish Mauser

I highly recommend a Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant. These are the Cadillac of the Mosins, beautifully made, nice triggers and accuracy that can approach the Swiss K31 with good ammo. They shoot 7.62x54R like regular Mosins.

I agree a finnish nagant is a must have in any collection, but I just picked up a hex reciever laminated stock 91/30 in excellent condition with 100% matching numbers last weekend for $115 including tax. At that price its hard to go wrong!

Bratch go by Brigadoons and fondle the ones he has in stock. He carries most of what is on the market.
I vote for the 8mm mausers and Enfields. Mosins or K-31s dont do anything for me.

Another vote for the K-31.Sweet rifle, fast, smooth straight-pull bolt (I love that, why arent ALL bolt guns like that?), ammo is very reasonable, hunting ammo is avilable, and the round should be fine for anything in N.America I woud think, and the tag under the buttpate (if you get one) is just an awesome little blast from the past.Did I mention they are just great guns....:)
