Wow.

WOW.

Had a two-day Karambit course with Steve Tarani this weekend. About 12-15 students showed up. Steve was the only instructor but constantly walked around correcting our littlest mistakes.

Beginning of the day started off with basic things like movement, grips, and a few manipulation exercises. The course focused on defensive tactics, such as being kicked while on the ground, being pummeled in close quarters, defense against other edged weapons and edged weapon take-aways (umm...cutaways)

I had reservations about signing up and did so at the last moment as I didn't want to spread myself too thin with too many weapon systems, but by the end of the 16 hour course, I have more karambit formal training than I do conventional edged weapon training so I carry an Emerson around now.

IIRC no martial arts or edged weapons experience was required, but the little martial arts and edged weapons background still was a great deal helpful in understanding some of the tactics; we practiced taking an armed aggressor to the ground with the karambit, but did not have enough time to have a discourse on the mechanics. If you have no martial arts background, I recommend taking some until the next time Tarani comes to town so you can get more out of the class. Knife take-aways from aggressors were similar to those that you learn being empty handed, with the advantage of having a karambit.

Tuition was $250 and a bargain for an instructor of Steve's caliber...er...blade length  www.contactdefense.com

Hey Skunk. Can you tell us about the philosophy behind the weapon compared to a regular knife? What is the role and advantages over carrying a spiderco folder for example.

Thanks,
Dave
