There would likely be a qualification process by the court to ensure that the lawyer understands points of law and procedure, but yes, lawyers often represent cases in foreign countries.

Anyone we hired would be acting as a consultant rather than as my friend's barrister. The firm we've engaged does excellent work in criminal cases, it's just that this kind of SD situation is less common here and I want them to have the benefit of someone with extensive SD trial experience, rather than just a thorough understanding of the law. Just working every last percentile.

Mr. Ayoob said on a recent episode of Gun Talk that defense attorneys are not trained in dealing with self-defense shooting cases. They may be great defense attorneys, but they need some insight in how to present the case.
