My family and I recently relocated from Ohio to Sumter, South Carolina. We are looking for a few things in the Sumter area, though we would be willing to make the drive to Columbia if it's worth the trip. Here's what we need, in no particular order:

1) SC CCW instructor
2) FFL for transfers & on site retail purchases
3) Full service gunsmith for routine repairs
4) Indoor pistol / rifle range
5) Outdoor rifle range (100 yards+)

Thanks,
R

Google Carolina Shooters Forum, lots of good info there. And welcome to SC you picked a great state. We live in Rock Hill a little north of Columbia.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm a Yankee by birth (WA state), but I love the south. I've lived in TX and MS, and I've been looking for an excuse to come back this way ever since I moved to OH in '04. When I got a job offer here last month, I jumped at it. :)

Haven't visited Sumter in 25 years. Used to be a gun shop in Columbia (Hiller's, I think) that carried an excellent variety of reloading components. Used to stock up whenever we visited the (ex) wife's family.

Welcome! I'm on the other side of Columbia from you, so my answers should be considered guidelines. You may have other options in Sumter.

1) SC CCW instructor

Not sure of who in Sumter teaches, but www.scfirearms.org should help. Locally, Paul Peters or DR. Katz give excellent classes. Be advised though, you need to get familiar with SC's CWP laws as there are some twists and turns for the unwary.

2) FFL for transfers & on site retail purchases

Several vendors here in Columbia. Palmetto State Armory has their retail outlet here and there is a Sportsmans Warehouse on I-26, Piney Grove road intersection. Shooter's Choice is a decent gunstore and has an indoor range. May want to check with Bud's gunshop for a FFL in Sumter. Mkdrgn (THR member) is in Lexington, but we are a 45 minute (+) drive for you.

3) Full service gunsmith for routine repairs

If you can catch him, Phil at Innovative Arms in Elgin is about it. We have a severe lack of gunsmiths in the area.

4) Indoor pistol / rifle range

Shooter's Choice in West Columbia is the closest to you. Some rifles can be fired there, not sure as to what. The range is very restrictive. Decent for accuracy work, not much for practical shooting.

5) Outdoor rifle range (100 yards+)

There are several. One near Charleston (may be closer, not sure), Mid Carolina Rifle Club in South Congaree and Mid Carolina Gun Club near Orangeburg.

I know outside Greenville towards Travelers Rest there is a guy that sell boiled peanuts. Sounds horrible, but they are very yummy. I'll ask my brothers, they live in the area.

Starting April 4, 2009, the rifle and pistol range will be open on Saturdays 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM and Sundays from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

Great place to live inexpensively.

Great place to live if you like to shoot golf. (Not sure when the 'season' opens.)

GREAT new governor.

The Sumter diner located downtown did serve great breakfasts, and watch out for the alligators near every waterway. They have gotten big, very agressive and have lost what fear of people they ever had.

My mother lives in Sumter. I love to come see her and go see them F-16 fighter jets . You used to could park accross the road from the run way and sit and watch them take off and land but sense 9-11 they put a stop to that you can't even stop on the side of the road no more. ENJOY YOUR NEW HOME TOWN. I live in Lancaster about 70 to 80 miles from Sumter about 20 miles before you get to Rock Hill

I live in Georgia and am taking care of my mother since my father passed last month. I know that SC disarms me every time I cross the border since they have no reciprocity agreement with Ga. I have to leave my gun in my glove box until I get on my parents property.:banghead: They require a permit to carry & require you to own real property or reside in SC in order to be issued a permit. They require you to take a course (I think it's 8 hrs.) that includes range time to show competency with the gun. Must pass a qualifying shoot to get the permit.

There is a bill (S.249) in the senate committee on judiciary that would ease some of their restrictions on carrying, but it appears to be stalled right now or it's moving at a snails pace. Looks like the liberals are trying to attach amendments that would limit it's effectiveness. Imagine that! :cuss:

If this has been posted a million times in the preceding pages sorry. I just wasn't going to read through it all first. Hey either I'm lazy or my time is far to important to waste sifting through 36 pages in this thread. Personally I'll go with lazy thing, since I do have an inside track on my mental state...

hey man, im just across the county line in manning, our local sheriffs department puts on a great cwp class you can take, when it comes to gun shops you have to go see jim strong at strong arms, he is the best, he's rather new but if you go to jim's guns or tony's you may as well expect to be treated like dirt and be prepared to saw ur legs and arms off if you want to purchase anything (tony tried to charge me $85 for 2 1911 mags) when it comes to a gunsmith strong arms can do a little bit, if not go to randy's firearms over here in manning. When it comes to an indoor range your gonna have to go to shooters choice over in columbia. outdoor ranges......hmm... yeah you CAN go out to manchester but they have some really ridiculous rules, there not really cool guys if u catch my drift, this may not be an option but maybe u can hook up with some guys and use private ranges. like i said i live rite here 20 mins away from you, if you need anything pm me.
