I will be buying my first AR this week and have narrowed the brand selection down to Stag or LMT.

My first question is - is the LMT worth the extra $250 or so over the Stag? I want a quality rifle and am looking for a gun I will be proud to give to one of my sons someday.

The gun will be used for target play, varmints, the occasional rabbit hunt and a defense weapon should I need more than a 12 gauge someday.

I plan on equipping the gun with an Eotech optic, quality BUIS and a rail-type hand guard this week. Will likely add a magnifier, weapon light and other goodies at a later date.

I've got several H&K mags already and plan on buying more. Any other quality mags you guys are fans of? The H&Ks are nice, but spendy and I want a bunch stockpiled in the basement.

TIA

I own a Stag Model 6 Varminter and have another AR with a Stag lower on it. Both have been great. My model 6 shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards just as advertised.

Is the LMT worth the extra money? Well that depends on which rifle comes with more of what you want as far as configuration. Quality wise I don't think it is worth the extra money but either rifle will serve you well.

Rabbit hunting? An AR is a serious rabbit gun! :what: You must have some big vicious rabbits.
Keep in mind when you add a maginfier to an Eotech it will also amplify the dot. If I am going long range on my AR's I prefer a good old scope.

Go with the LMT.

Skip the rail handguard. Get out and shoot the gun, and figure out from there what you need/want for your purposes. You may find that you have no use for the rail. I'm beginning to come to that realization myself.

:D I hunt jack rabbits with all of my guns as a way of becoming proficient with them. Practice on jack rabbits makes everything else easy...

LMT>Stag, but if you're willing to replace small parts that may break, the difference gets a lot smaller. It all depends how much use you intend to put the gun to, and how much you need it to run without failure. For casual use, the Stag is fine.

Pmag>HK mag. Period.

I ordered my first AR last night, a left hand Stag. I'm interested in the answers here and also wondering what optics I should consider. I'm leaning toward EOTech but nothing hard and fast yet. This rifle will mostly see range time but will be my go-to hog gun as well.

lmt has a little bit better rep them stag but not by much. I would probably go with the stag.

I would skip the HK mags in favor of the Pmag. Best mags i have used.

LMT's use some serious steel. You'll be trying for a very long time to make that kind of gun wear down.

But, I really son't see how one could really wear out a Stag, either. Or any decent AR, for that matter.

If you're gonna run an AR hard, the LMT will more than take the abuse, but I don't see how a Stag with chrome won't take it well either.

Thanks for the info, guys.

I don't plan on trying to wear the weapon out. I look for function first, but do appreciate a nice fit and finish. If the LMT is noticeably better, I don't mind shelling out a few extra clams. That said, if there is little difference, I'd rather spend the money on better optics.

The differences you need to be concerned about will not be in the barrel or the receivers. They will be in the bolt, and in the quality of fiddling little bits that will cost little to replace, but will tie up the gun if they fail.

YOU need to decide if the extra reliablity is worth the extra money, given your intended usage. If I was carrying a gun on patrol, be it Fallujah or Detroit, I would want the LMT. If I was using it for casual plinking, I would go Stag, and never look back. Throwing in home defense makes it more complicated.

FWIW, my HD AR-15 is my RRA, which is probably comparable in quality to a Stag. I feel safe.

As I understand it the HK mags don't hold up well to actual usage. Save the money and buy twice as many P-mags.

LMT!!!! and dont waste any more of your money on H&K mags. Magpul P-mags are THE best mags on the market and cost less the 15 bucks. Go to youtube and look up P-mag torture test or somthing of that nature

Stag and LMT make excelent products. They are not in my opinion in the same class though. Both are quality though and you could do worse (see below)

Something to think about, check out the Charles Daly models D-M4LE and
D-M4.

The D-M4LE is at least comparable to the LMT models. The D-M4 is equal to if not slightly better than a Model 1 Stag.

I'd stay away from RRA, you can get better quality for the same money if not less. You have to wait until they get the parts from Stag/CMT, which is why there are 12 week lead times for their products. They use the cheapest parts usually and the barrel material they use on their carbines is among them.

I'd stay away from:
an Eotech optic, quality BUIS and a rail-type hand guard this week. Will likely add a magnifier, weapon light and other goodies at a later date.

Buy it, buy ammo and learn how to shoot it. You can use iron sights out to 300 meters +. If you're using it for home defense, mount a flash light and then learn how to shoot it some more.
