Looking at possibly getting a Krebs Ak 47 clone. The one I am looking at is the AK-103 clone that is traditionally styled with sythetic stock and has the muzzle break on it (SLR-103 model, catalog #35).

Cost is about $1000. Are they worth the money?

Can you replace the sythetic stock easily with a wooden stock? (IOW, Do the Krebs customs have the same specs as a traditional AK?)

Thanks.

I have one of his early AK103K's and love it. Its been a very dependable and accurate rifle. Mine has the 14" barrel with the welded on brake. I believe that any furniture that fits on the stamped receivers will fit on it. I think they are worth the extra money.

Kreb's is like the Fulton Armory/Wilson Combat of AK's.

You're getting a custom job AK. You're getting something that a competent gunsmith worked on. Not an assembly line of low-pay guys hammering parts together.

It is pricy, but from what I've seen, they are the best AK out there period.

IMO that rifle is not worth $1000.

It is not a clone of a 103. A 103 is not milled, and has a polymer folding stock. You could have a REAL 103 clone built for less than that rifle.

If you want a nice milled AK just get an arsenal.

Edit: Here is a real 103. http://world.guns.ru/assault/as05-e.htm

You're thinking of the Vepr.

Now, there are some Krebs guns that are, in turn, based on the Vepr...

Krebs

You asked if the Krebs rifle "is worth it." The question should be "is it worth it to you?" I have a Krebs KTR-103S? based on a Saiga action. The rifle is the cats ass, period. I know Mark Krebs, he is a huge fan of the AK, and understands them. His products are top of the line. You will never purchase something from him that you feel could have been better if this or that had been done to it. The Vepr actioned rifles are more stoutly constructed than the Saigas, but It makes no difference as to performance. One thing you get with a Krebs, is a real trigger. Mark works the trigger to break evenly, and consistently. Nothing like how a stock AK clone lets off. His picatinny forearm, and rear peep sights ADD to the AK design. Not many products do. My, advice, buy it.

Went ahead and ordered my Krebs Custom SLR-103. Should be in my hands by end of week. Will be nice to have a high quality AK after shooting and using so many AKs in poor condition overseas. This will be a good training rifle.

Did you go to his site and look at the rifle in question?

His custom guns like you are mentioning may very well be worth the price, you cant get them from anyone else. The rifle in question is probably a SLR-95, or some other kind of milled arsenal, with a new buttstock (and US parts), gas block, and front sight block and brake. Its probably been refinished as well, given his reputation. I just dont think those few things are worth $500 or more, when you can get the same thing from arsenal for many hundreds less.

He is high on other rifles as well. Item 34 is basically an AK-74 that has had the barrel cut. You can have a new SLR-105RA1 for $600 or so. Is cutting the barrel and pinning a brake worth $380?

Item 29 is a straight AK-74 that is mislabeled as a 74M. All it has had is trigger work done, and possibly a refinish. Again, $350 or so over market price.

A few of his other 74s, with the folders, are more reasonably priced, but still 100-200 hundred high compared with what you can get if you shop around.
