KTR, XCR, or SCAR

I am dying to blow some money. Should I get a KTR in 7.62 x 39 or should I wait on Robarm's new XCR in either 7.62 x 51 or 6.8 REM. I also heard that FN recently won the SCAR trials. Does anyone know anything about their entry and if it will be produced in a civy-legal version. The last option is to just keep my current battle rifle a CAI FAL and save some cash.

Give me Pros and Cons between the XCR and KTR. Thanks in advance.

Tough one. I'm one of the beta testers for the XCR, and it is very cool. And the Vepr KTR is one of my favorite guns taken to its pinnicle.

They are still working on the XCR. It is going to be an awesome gun, but it is still a little way off from market, and I don't know what it is going to cost. I like it a lot though, and I think it has the potential to be the best thing out there.

I like the KTR a lot, but I've done most of the same things to my own Vepr for a lot less money. Just something to keep in mind. The KTR is a great gun though.

How much can a novice like myself do to the VEPR without a gunsmith? Can you give me some details on the products you used to turn your VEPR into a KTR.

Last I looked, FN, and especially FNMI, didn't make civvy versions of their military rifles.

No civvy version of that spiffy new bullpup of theirs.
No civvy AR-15s made by FNMI (they've got the DoD M-16 contract.)
Damn sure no civvy M249, M240, Mk-46, or Mk-48 versions coming from them.

If/when the FNMI SCAR goes into full productions, I wouldn't look for a civvy version.

ctiger, the only thing on the KTR I really liked was the A2 dustcover sights. So I put those on. I don't like Kreb's idea of putting the front sight on the gas block. You lose some adjustability, and it is a shorter radius. I can operate the safety with my trigger finger, so there was no need for the KTR safety. You can dremel out your own stock pretty easy. So mine is not a KTR by any means, just the features I happen to like from the KTR.

Where did you get the dustcover sight? What brand is it? Any thing special required for installation?

It is the dustcover A2 sight. It does require installation. My smith did mine, but it was easy and he did not charge me much.

I've changed the picture several times since I first posted it... It now has several mods to the picture to make a simulated .308 version:

Action/mag was lengthened, mag was straightened and cut off. Ejection port was lowered and lengthened slightly. Top receiver was lengthened to gas block. Sights were folded down and ACOG was reattached. Also sports a Vortex FS now.
