I have just bought a brand new Model 48-7 (.22Mag). Saw online where a "New Style" S &W 17 six shot cylinder #41207000 can be bought. Can this cylinder be used on a 48-7 like in the days when you had the extra cylinder option of 22 L.R. They are both for a six shot K frame?

I don't have an informed answer. You might try posting this in the revolver section of this forum, or going to a Smith and Wesson specific forum and asking there. I am under the impression that cylinders are not "drop in" parts, but would need to be fitted to the frame. Again, I don't know for sure.

When the early model 48 .22 mags offered the long rifle cylinder (Like Ruger still does) they were a fitted to the gun a matched set. However have heard because machine tolerances do not deviate that much in that critical section of the gun, many have transferred a model 17 L.R. cylinder from one gun into a model 48 mag.other gun... What your referring to is a timing issue. Trick is the model's suffix number. That is to say, you can't put a 17-3 cylinder in a 48-7 guns have to have the same suffix number.

As apposed to hashing out the model 17's .22 L.R. cylinder in model 48 .22 mag puzzle,, found and bought second gun instead, a model 17-4 N.O.S. never shot gun in 8 3/8. So, two guns, each in their designed caliper is how I chose end up. I did find out though over on the Smith & Wesson site not only are they sending the .22 L.R. round down the .22 Mag's barrel,,,they are also doing the reverse shooting the .22 mag round down the model 17's .22 L.R. barrel and saying "that's the more accurate combo" Haven't found out if that creates adverse barrel wear, probably ruins it quick.
