A 36-year-old LaPlace man remained hospitalized Tuesday after he was
shot in the chest by his ex-girlfriend Monday night, St. John the
Baptist Parish sheriff's detectives said.
But authorities think Violet T. Fleming, 37, shot Sean Schnyder because
he was trying to force his way into her home, said Capt. Mike Tregre,
Sheriff's Office spokesman.

No arrests have been made.

"It appears to be an act of self-defense," Tregre said.

"But we are still investigating. He tried to force his way into her
apartment and she shot him."

The shooting occurred at Fleming's home on Linda Lane in LaPlace, Tregre
said.

According to an incident report, Fleming called deputies to her home
about 10 p.m. because Schnyder was trying to get in. But before deputies
could arrive, they got another call reporting the shooting.

When deputies arrived, Schnyder tried to run, the report said, but they
were able to catch him.
Schnyder was brought to Charity Hospital. His condition was unavailable
Tuesday.
The couple had a history of violence, authorities said.

The two used to live together, but shortly after they broke up about two
weeks ago, Fleming had placed a restraining order against Schnyder,
authorities said.

I don't know their history re:domestic violence, whether it was one sided or mutual. But if he was violating a restraining order and trying to break in I think she did the right thing. Good for her. Maybe now he'll know what "NO" means.

[Martha Stewart Voice] Here's a helpful household hint. If you shoot an attacker and he or she is still standing... shoot them again. Repeat as needed until done. [/Martha Stewart Voice]
