I have read they are expected to be in session for less than a week. Items of concern would be the Homeland Secuirty Act currently in conference (to work out differences between House and Senate versions).

Compromises could be really significant, and any pressure to agree to passage in this session could produce some interesting if not disturbing stuff. Of particular interest to me is the Senate provision for Congressional oversight of civil rights abuses, in preference to the President having all discretion. I believe this is a direct reflection of concerns about the Patriot Act. I would be very interested in keeping the Senate provision intact.

Another one is John McCain's slam dunk to provide for National ID cards. This is intended to serve Arizona's special interest in limiting public services to undocumented, illegal Mexican immigrants. It is not really germane to Homeland Security but might be represented as such. I suppose it could be viewed as indirectly serving Arizona's purpose, but it was not properly reviewed and debated before passage, while the Senate was weak with election concerns and absences.

Should you have any desire to write to a Congressman on this matter, which may happen rather quickly, as in kablam!, the following references from Thomas will provide names of those involved in the conference:

S.2845

pursuant to the orders of October 10 and 11, 2004.

The Government Printing Office has published the text of S. 2845 as passed Senate (the PP - "Public Print" version) and as passed House (the EAH - "Engrossed Amendment as Agreed to by House" version). See "Text of Legislation" below.
