Lapping scope rings?

I'm with the "check alignment first" camp. I think it's most important on cheap rings, but I trust my quality control more than pretty much any manufacturer.

That's not a knock against any manufacturer so much as against the process. There's no way they have time to check every set of rings as closely as I can when I'm installing them.

It only takes a few minutes, and, averaged across so many scopes, it only costs a few dollars. That's cheap insurance on a (usually) substantial investment of glass.
