Guns around here goes good at an auction where there is only guns reloading supply safes ammo. I bough a S&W 44 mag for 550.00 sold at auction 875.00. I had some sold on the phone line I have some sold on the INTERNET at the same sale also on sealed bids. This auctioneer has to large sales a year.

The OP hasn't revealed what state he's in, and that potentially could create some issues. I recently had to perform a similar duty for my best friend's widow. A large number went to friends and acquaintances who wanted to acquire some of his collection, and most of the rest were sold through a local board ( www.vaguntrader.com ) which allowed us to sell the rest FTF inside the state and not have any hassles with shipping, auction / gunbroker fees or FFL's.

I would do the gun show route, you will get more money, avoid exposure to unknowns coming to your home and returning to rob you. And keep a low profile for tax purposes. Plus you can have some fun with it.But post them up here first.

If there is an auction house in your area that is gun oriented I would suggest using them. They will charge a seemingly outrageous commission but a GOOD auctioneer can get more than the going price for guns.

Is there a limit to the number of guns per month (year?) that a person can sell before the authorities consider you to be a "dealer" and require more oversight?

never mind. I did a search here with a couple key words that didn't turn up much relevant. then I went to an outside search engine and, surprise, 2 of the top 10 were THR threads....I got my answer.

AFAIK only California has such a law.

Penal Code 26500
(a) No person shall sell, lease, or transfer firearms unless the person has been issued a license pursuant to Article 1 (commencing with Section 26700) and Article 2 (commencing with Section 26800) of Chapter 2.
(b) Any person violating this article is guilty of a misdemeanor.

Penal Code 26520
(a) Section 26500 does not apply to the infrequent sale, lease, or transfer of firearms.
(b) As used in this section, "infrequent" has the meaning provided in Section 16730.

Penal Code 16730
(a) As used in Section 31815 and in Division 6 (commencing with Section 26500) of Title 4, "infrequent" means:
(1) For handguns, less than six transactions per calendar year.
(2) For firearms other than handguns, occasional and without regularity.
(b) As used in Section 27900, the term "infrequent" shall not be construed to prohibit different local chapters of the same nonprofit corporation from conducting auctions or similar events, provided the individual local chapter conducts the auctions or similar events infrequently. It is the intent of the Legislature that different local chapters, representing different localities, be entitled to invoke the exemption created by Section 27900, notwithstanding the frequency with which other chapters of the same nonprofit corporation
may conduct auctions or similar events.
(c) As used in this section, "transaction" means a single sale, lease, or transfer of any number of handguns.

There are always tables at shows withh private collectors selling used guns. I know a sherriff who is at the shows in Ft pierce and palm beach, who does it. He said it's perfectlly legal as long as the guns are not new. The same as buying from any private party. Just Id is needed to be shown.

Dury's Gun Shop out of San Antonio. When I lived there that was one of my favorite places to go. http://www.durysguns.com/sell-your-guns

They advertise on Tom Gresham's Gun Talk and Tom Gresham used them to sell Grit's collection. From what I know they'll do right by you and being a large collection they will likely come and appraise it for you. Check 'em out.

BTW: I like someones idea of trying for your pick. Best of luck.

I would call a local auction company. People really seem to get caught up in a live auction and prices can get close to retail, or higher. Most auctioneers will work for a 10% buyers premium, that does not cost you anything (if the collection is large enough). You have an auction, and you are done in one day.

I agree with this advice. Many auction houses will have staff that specialize in certain type of items. Cars, firearms, designer furniture, farm equipment, whatever. A fire arms auction will generally bring in a TON of people and a good auctioneer will be able to get a good price for the collection and get it all moved in a couple of hours.
