For those of use that have concealed permits issued in Larimer County, CO I just want to point out that the policy has changed. Where the permits used to be good for the term of the Sheriff, they are now only good for 5 years. This is important, because if you got your permit issued prior to 2003 (I can't find the letter, and so I forget the exact date) your license expired on June 30th of this year. Anyway, if you haven't got the letter yet, you will.

I believe all colorado permits under the current law (which was put into place in 2003) have to be renewed every 5 years. Mine says right on it expires 7/*/2010 (my birthday).

True, but until recently Larimer County operated under it's old rules, which were that the license expired with the issuing Sheriffs term, unless he got reelected.

JL, I don't have a link, as they sent me a letter in the mail. Later tonight I will just post the entire letter.
 
your permit must be issued prior to 2003. I do hold a Larimer county permit, got it in july of 2005.

That would suck though, losing your permit just because a new sheriff gets elected.

"18-12-216. Permits issued prior to May 17, 2003.
Statute text
(1) A permit issued pursuant to section 18-12-105.1, as it existed prior to its repeal, shall permanently expire on June 30, 2007, or on the expiration date specified on the permit, whichever occurs first. A person who submitted a full set of fingerprints to obtain a permit prior to May 17, 2003, upon expiration of the permit, may apply for renewal of the permit as provided in this part 2. A person who did not submit a full set of fingerprints to obtain a permit prior to May 17, 2003, upon expiration of the permit, may apply for a new permit as provided in this part 2.

(2) Within one hundred twenty days prior to the expiration of a permit issued pursuant to section 18-12-105.1, as it existed prior to its repeal, the issuing authority shall send a notice of expiration to the permittee to notify the permittee of the permit expiration as provided in subsection (1) of this section and of his or her ability to renew the permit or obtain a new permit as provided in subsection (1) of this section."

Well, I know that law went into effect in 2003, but I have actually moved twice sense 2003, and they never said anything then, so I assumed they were still doing it the same way. Matter of fact, I actually called during the last election year to see if the Sheriff was running again, and nothing was said then, either. Also, while the Shall Issue rule is nice, the counties still do it differently. My roommate's permit was issued in Weld County, and they do it a whole lot differently than they do in Larimer. Weld is (and was, for all intents and purposes) "shall issue", but the paperwork involved was and is much different. All in all, it's not that big of a deal except for the fact that the Sheriffs Dept. said that there was a paperwork mixup, and as a result, I have been carrying illegally for the last month or so. Other than that, the five year rule doesn't bother me in the least.

Also, I got my permit in 2002, so in the end, it expired in 5 years anyway.
