Hey guys, cool site ya have here! I recently moved to Vegas from PHX and am in need of some "open Range" areas in the desert to go plink at. Anybody have any spots they would like to share or maybe meet up to shoot some rounds? We had some nice spots in AZ to go but I am clueless of where to go here, just want to make sure it is safe and legal. I've went to a couple indoor ranges and although it is good when it is hot, I can only afford so many lead-free tangable rounds.

Thanks!

Hey BLACK-N-TAN, welcome to Vegas!

Discount firearms on Highland Drive only requires manufactured (no re-manufactured) ammo. Also, they allow anything up to 30-06 range of cartridges.

Check out the Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club. Membership is only about $60 per year, and they have a great outdoor facility. Also part of the range is open to the public Sun-Tues-Thur-Saturday.

Shooting out in the desert in Clark County is verboten, but all the neighboring counties are kosher. Ask at a local dealer what the local laws are.

thanks for the info guys, I've been wanting to check out that rifle range...it says they open it up to 1000yds every now and again :D

Recommendations

Two places: (1) Boulder Rifle & Pistol Club (public area) and (2) Desert Sportsmen Rifle & Pistol Club (during the IDPA or USPSA match).

Isn't there a big freakin' dry lake near the California state line? I've seen video of a guy shooting a fifty over a mile.

There are areas north and south of town where you can shoot for free, the southern place being off of the Sloan exit of I-15 and the northern area off of 95. The one off of 95 is easy to find and looks kinda like a mini Grand Canyon right off the road but the Sloan one is much harder to find. IIRC you take the Sloan exit, go over to LV Blvd (the frontage road), turn right and go south 6 miles. At that point there'll be a dirt road to the left and you can go back there and shoot. It's farther than the lake bed but that was closed to shooting sometime back by the BLM people.

Bass my brother, Although I am not opposed to a Half-N-Half every now and again.

Thanks for the shooting areas guys!! Really helps me out.
I will check out that place past the dry lake this weekend, I'm dying to take some long range shots with my new bushmaster. I went to the Boulder range last Sunday and all that was open was the 25 yarders

Does anybody know. . . ?

I lived in Las Vegas for fifteen years from the mid-70s to the early 90s. We're planning to go back for the Thanksgiving holiday. For the whole week, in fact.

We used to go out behind Sunrise Mountain on East Lake Mead Blvd to set up for target shooting. There was a turn off on a dirt road and a gypsum plant about ten miles further on. Nice secluded area. Completely deserted. Lots of rolling hills. Perfect for target shooting, and a lot of people used that area for just that purpose.

Anybody know if the area is still open for shooting? If it has built up? Or the local authorities finally put a stop to it? It would really be great to get some trigger time while we're up there. It beats sitting in a casino and watching our money disappear. ;)

Best spot I found is as follows.
Take the 15 south past St. Rose Pkwy.
Go to Jean, exit Goodsprings.
Make a right at the stopsign and go past the gas station.
Follow that road for about 2-3 miles, you should see some foothills on the right. I can't remember exactly where the turn off is, but it will be between some power poles. If you are taking a dirtroad that is near the foothills, you are in the right spot. It's about 1/4 mile off the main road, you'll see spent cartridges all over the place. I have shot out there all day with all kinds of toys and was never bothered.
Don't stop for hitchhikers there, there's a prison on the west side of the 15.
