I freguently stop by Cheaper Than Dirt in Fort Worth, TX and purchase ammo. They usually have 50 round boxes of ammo in 9mm, .40 and .45acp that say law enforcement ammo on the box. This stuff is Federal HST, Federal hydroshock tactical and Winchester ranger. The ammo looks good and is priced at about $20 a box depending on caliber. How does this ammo compare to other common personal defense ammo?

My understanding is that the Federal HST is very good stuff. The Hydra-Shok is considered dated by some but I am convinced that it will still get the job done. The Winchester Ranger line is also supposed to be top stuff. I still believe that any of the "premium" lines such as Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, Federal Tactical, HST or Hydra-Shok, and Winchester Ranger, willl serve you well. Of the three you mentioned, I would recommend the HST.

Hope this helps.

LE sales-ammo makers...

Many factors go into what type of ammo a LE agency may use(price/design/documented use/etc).

Depending on the caliber you may want contact the LE sales rep/office to see what agencies use the loads you are interested in. ;)

I'd suggest a 165gr JHP for the .40S&W, a 124gr +P or the 127gr +P+ Winchester Ranger round(the top pick for LEOs, ;) ) in 9mmNATO and a 200gr JHP or 230gr JHP +P in .45acp.

Most of the personal defense ammo that I have bought has been Ferderal Hydroshocks, Speer Gold Dots and Remington Golden Sabers. This ammo that I have mentioned seems to be priced right, so I bought some to stock up. I am really not concerned if law enforcement uses it, it is just packaged that way. I just wanted to know if it is good stuff, because 50 rounds for $20-$27seems better than $16-$23 for 20 rounds. The Ranger and HST are $20 for whatever caliber of the three that I mentioned. The Hydroshock tactical are the more expensive and least interesting to me.

Premium ammo in boxes of 50 is hard to find, so I say stock up. Like I said before, the HST stuff is supposed top be great stuff so that is what I would go with.
