I've been Shooting my own cast wheel weight bullets in my Springfiels ,loaded, target 1911 now for about 3 years,230 gr. Lee TL round nose,2500 to 3000 rounds with good results.I decided to try some of MO. Bullets 230 grain commertial cast leads. Now I'm getting a lead back wash on my emptys from the MO. Bullets. What could be causing this and should I worry about it.I am shooting them at about 800 to 850 FPS. biker

jcwit,it looks like a thin smear of lead, about halfway back on the fired case, covering about 1/3 third of the case.I was using Unique poweer=5.5 gr

I'd make a guess it more like powder soot from to low pressure loading, the case is not expanding completely into the chamber. It happens on some of my light loads and causes no problems. Very doubtful that it is lead.

But then I might finally be wrong for once.

If you are sure it is actually lead, Are you sure that you aren't shaving lead when you load the bullets? Maybe you didn't notice it until you shot them.

never heard of lead bullets causing this condition on a pistol case. curious as to the reason.

I saw this over the weekend on some range pickup brass. Looks like a light coating of grey/silver starting at the case mouth. At least it sounds like what the OP described.
