I was at our local, remote, outdoor gun range Sat AM to shoot my Les Baer some. That went well, BTW.

Met somebody there I had never seen before. Here are some 'gun gems' I learned from him-IN JUST THE ONE SESSION.

1. He is a vet from Korea and Viet Nam. When he left the service, they offered to sell him is service M14 for $160. He turned it down and has regretted it ever sence.

2. He duck hunts with a Franchi 12 ga autoloader (3.5"). It only comes into its own at 80-90 yards. If you shoot them closer than 60 yards, there isn't anything left to eat.

3. His 'hog gun' is a Win M94 30-30 carbine he 'found FLOATING in the rivers floodwaters'. Killed a hog with it next day with the same ammo in it when he found it.

4. Bought a 'deer gun'-a Rem 700 in .284. Got a 'sniper scope' with all the little dots in it to compensate for distance and windage. Killed a deer with in one shot at a 'measured' 760 steps. His hunting partner bought him a washer and dryer PLUS gave him $1000 for the gun. Partner killed a deer at nearly 700 yds in one shot with it the next morning.

Sure gives the muscles a workout trying to hold a straight face!

I've heard some tall tales, but not usually that many from the same person in such a short period of time.

That guy's a candy-a$$. I rembember those days, when you couldn't find a 1911 that wasn't a Colt, or maybe an old Detonics, and Melanie Griffith was hot. I served with Prince and The Revolution during the cola wars, and it was a long tour. Most of the doctrine you see Steve Gutenberg employing all through the Police Academy movies is stuff I developed. I'm especially proud of the shoe polish on the megaphone mouthpice, which I regard as a milestone in potential officer safety.
When I was mustered out around the time the New Power Generation took over, they let me keep my phased pulse plasma rifle and threw in six free cases of Crystal Pepsi, a synthesizer, an unlicensed backpack nuclear accelerator, and a DeLorean that is also a time machine.
Still, I'm haunted by my fallen comrades, most notably the Bartles & Jaymes guys, Alf (who had all the missing mags for the Bren-10 in his saucer), Molly Ringwald's career, and Christina Applegate as featured on that poster my dog ate when I took it down to spackle over the throwing star holes in my bedroom sheetrock.

(Making stuff up is only fun if it's so far over the top, you can't see the top from there.)
