I shoot my rifle at the range to make sure it works but don't really have much fun with it.

I hate sitting at that stupid table, it's just uncomfortable and I don't want to buy all those doodad rests. I'll probably make do with a bipod and see how that goes.

What fun is there to be had at a square rifle range? I'd like to be able to improve my groups but can't seem to make the experience as enjoyable as going tactical with my pistols.

I tried shooting steel but the things are so far away, I can't tell if I'm hitting them or not.

there must be something wrong with your rifles. here, send them to me, i'll check them out and if everything is a-o-k, i'll return them to you, at no cost. otherwise i'll just take them off your hands and you can then turn your attention to your practical tactical pistols.

lemme just get my ffl info for you, just take a second.

You need to do some "tactical plinking", Skunk.

Reactive targets. Informal drills. Nice scenery. Pick up yer stuff when you're through.

How about get off the bench and learn to shoot on your hind legs, butt, and your belly?

Not sure if it's possible at some ranges. I have a semi-auto and my brass will be flying at the other customers :(

You need to get out into the country and try some plinking.

Washing machines, dryers, old cars, rusted out heaps of various things, tree stumps, pop cans and anything else you can think of.

You don't know what your missing, Skunk! :D :neener: :D

Shoot prone
Shoot kneeling/sitting
Shoot offhand
Shoot at balloons
Shoot at pop cans
Practice rapid fire
Practice mag changes
Practice tactical reloads
Practice malfunction drills (double-feeds and dud rounds)
Bring some carboard, set it up as "cover", and shoot from behind it
Bring two pieces of "cover" and move from one to the other in between shots
Shoot at dusk or dawn, if you can
Move to a 25 or 50 yard range and practice rifle-to-pistol transitions

If all this fails, mail me your M1A and I'll send back photos of ME enjoying it. :)

Your empties don't eject when you shoot off the bench?

I can get those standup partition walls at the club house but I obviously can't put them to use if standing.

Try different targets. Something different from the standard circular ones.
I had a look at the target I shot at when I qualified for the US army rifle-badge and decided to take measurements and make my own scaled-down targets for shooting at our club's 50m range.

That's easy

Take a walk with the rifle on the farm . target rules are rocks in front of good backstop at three hundred yards out . rock should be ten or fifteen inches across . Dump shooting at distance sounds like fun . Rapid fire on drawn targets at reduced ranges to improve sight picture similarity , plus it gives a measure of your improvement .

Geez....

Shooting at steel... you can tell when you hit it when you hear a KLANGGG.

Sounds like you need a little friendly rivalry going on. Get a friend, with a comparable rifle. Get a golf ball or some reactive target. Toss it out, first guy takes a shot, next guy take a shot... keep it moving further and further until both of you give up. One who hits it the most wins.

Or, you can set up clay pigeons against the backstop.

Or you can set up some targets and mock barricades out on the range, start at prone, shoot at small targets, get up, and progress down the range shooting at the targets from behind the barricade, transition to pistol when you run out of ammo, etc.

Have you been to a 3-gun event?

1- Read up on tactical rifle use.
2- Practice like mad.
3- Challenge yourself.

Repeat steps 1-3 for enjoyment :)

Find an NRA high power or CMP match in your area.

Go forth and shoot, young man.

SB,

Ya in the LA area? If so, try this link...

ATTENTION RIFLE SHOOTERS!

Do you own an AR? An AK? An SKS? An M 1 Garand? An M14 clone? An FAL? Even a Springfield or an Enfield or a Mauser? Or something similar?

Would you like something you can do with them that is Politically Correct (no, not give them to the government) and sporting, too?

The LARC Pistol and Rifle Club holds monthly High Power Rifle matches for shooters using these rifles, and new shooters are always welcome. The matches are held at 9 AM the first Saturday of each month at Angeles Shooting Ranges in Lake View Terrace, CA, and run about two hours start to finish. The course of fire consists of two slow fire stages and two sustained fire stages for a total of 52 or 62 rounds depending on the month.

Minimum equipment requirements are a center fire rifle with iron sights capable of holding at least five rounds, at least 62 rounds of ammo (no steel cored or steel jacketed ammo per ASR rule) for it, and ear and eye protection. Magazines or clips for rapid reloading and a sling will make things a lot easier. Elbow pads and a 3 ft by 6 ft piece of carpet will make 4 things more comfortable. A telescope will make it possible to see your shot holes in the target (this can be rented from the range.)

If you would like to see how one of these matches works, we shoot every first Saturday at Angeles Shooting Ranges at the far end of the pistol/black powder range starting around 9:30 AM. You are invited to come out and watch, ask questions and/or shoot. For further information, call Bob Mijares 7 ((661) 251?0766 (evenings)) or George Gaskill ((909) 364?1643 (evenings) or [email protected])

Looks like some good fun. I'm gonna try it out.

At the risk of sounding racist, and stereotyping; I have found that the ability to rice-patty squat and shoot accurately out to 400 yards, to be very rewarding... Especially something like steel plates, which give an audible response when you hit it...

Every asian should be able to shoot accurately from a rice patty squat!! :D :p

Also, like everybody has said, going "tactical" with a rifle in the countryside is more fun then tipping a cow!

Albert, when you get back, you gotta show me how to do this rifle thing.

And I'll teach you how to shoot a pistol :D :D :D

(just kidding guys he's not bad at all)

Yeah. Its nice to roam the great outdoors with guns. Even better if you have a piece of the great outdoors where you can shoot at pre-staged targets. Out in the Mojave desert, when I was growing up, we would go out for a weekend and have fun shooting at stuff in the desert. Could be a rusted and collapsed water tank, or it could be a car door that we hauled out there. Or it could be against silohuette targets placed along a dried out creek bed that is over 9 feet deep.

How much do you tip a cow? 15%? ;)

I agree with a lot of the posters who recommended NRA High Power Rifle shooting. You will learn to be a real rifleman and not just a sand bag plinker. I think there is nothing more boring than plinking away off of sand bags because it takes no skill or physical training or effort.

I have seen children given minumal instruction shoot 1/4 inch groups in minutes off of sandbags but when you teach someone three position shooting especially off hand shooting it often takes years to reach your maximum potential and its a lot more satifsying and interesting than sand bag plinking.

Skunk,

Do we need to teach you how to have fun while having S-E-X as well????

:what:

Stinger

BTW, I'm only giving you a hard time

I'm not even that good at the sandbag thing.

What type of results should I wait for before getting into NRA high power? Minute of medium pizza at 200?

I'm not even that good at the sandbag thing.

What?!!!

The sandbag thing is just trigger pull and sight alignment. The weight of the gun is all on the sandbag, the only thing you are there for is for putting the sights on the target, pulling the trigger and stopping the rifle from recoiling off the bench.

I think that you should just do the NRA highpower match. Of course, you need the ability to see the target out at the distances where is it at. If you can't see it, you can't hit it.

Oh, and for people that use glasses to see, you want to also be looking through the part of the glasses through the middle, and not the edge of the lenses.
