Now why in the word is Steve putting a Leatherman Micra in the NFW sub-forum you might be asking yourself.

-Software, not Hardware.

-I am the weapon, the world is my toolbox - me
-I was raised with - Improvise, Adapt, Overcome , Think out of the box , Run what ya brung, etc.

-The fact of the matter is, not only do we have folks in the UK, and elsewhere, that are restricted in "weapons" such as knives that cannot be one hand opening, assist opening, locking or have total closed length , and blade length, we have such restrictions here in the USA in some workplaces and campuses, and currently we are concerned about more restrictions due to Customs and Border Patrol interpretations.

So I received a Leatherman Micra the other day. Actually one that has Sharper Image on it. A good used one.

So me being me, as I let it soak in hot soapy water, and later after it was rinsed , dried, and had some Singer Sewing Machine oil added to pivots and all, got to thinking about this 2.5 in | 6.5 cm (closed)
1.8 oz | 51 g
multi tool.

This one was minus the split ring for key ring attachment, and I found a old split ring from a fishing lure, a bit smaller, stuck it on and it will work fine.

This is simply a multi tool many folks have on key chains, in vehicles, desk drawers at the office, lockers too, kitchen utility drawers, bottom of a purse and who knows where else these are.

In some office settings, it is more "acceptable" ( I hate to use "politically correct") to use scissors, than a knife.
Fine, as let us be honest, sometimes scissors are the best tool for a task.
Say a soft package from USPS, UPS, FedEx, or even containers such as plastic, be these containing supplies, or a pouch of tuna fish being fixed for lunch in the break room.

We simply need to cut something, and not all cutting is done with a knife, scissors were designed to cut as well.
i.e.
Loose thread on clothing , or cutting the thread after sewing a button on at the office with a small kit of needle and thread in a desk drawer.

Remember, we are the weapon, (software), and we are supposed to think about what objects can be improvised or expedient if need for situations, be these just everyday needs or more serious.

There is a difference in improvised and expedient, by the way...

Now I have not had this Micra very long, too many years ago I won one, or it was in shooter's kit, forget, and never really messed with mine. I don't know what happened to it.
Still I have assisted others with theirs, and messed with them, as they had situations and concerns.

So I snagged a old worn shoe lace, and run it through the split ring.
Hauled off and whacked a piece of drywall and this Micra, put some serious dents in the drywall.

I shortened up the length of shoe lace, and placed this on a carbinger, as many folks carry keys, and the like on carbingers...

Again, I got to doing some whacking , offensive, defensive things , on various media, beside the drywall.
Again some serious "impressions" were made.

I snagged a mop handle , I keep handy, about 44" long and incorporated this micra with "stick".

Again , this simple Micra, on a shoe lace, and carbinger worked fine.
I repeated this with a 20 oz plastic bottle such as water or cokes come in.

What am I doing?
Replicating real life situations.
Every day, folks go to work, or college, and walk to and from a parking lot to a building, with keys.
Some do use a cane, others do have a bottle of water, coke, or even cup of coffee in hand...

They go outside to smoke, or take out the trash or any number of ADLs ( activities of daily living) with keys, and perhaps a Micra on person.

We remind folks, they may have to face a serious situation, with whatever they have on person.
Say a tornado siren goes off...and in the blink of an eye, folks find themselves in a serious situation at the office, college, or enroute to, or returning from.

More to come.

Right up front I will state I grew up with slip joints and fixed blades.
Safety is between the ears, not on some physical object. I do not care if this is a safety on a firearm, or locking feature of a knife.

Safety is between the ears, and one is supposed to learn correct , basic fundamentals of tools.

Heck, the first thing I was taught about a table saw, was to remove the safety and throw it as far as I could. That "safety" has caused more serious injury , in my experiences and observations than it has prevented.

Valkman, can I get a "hell yeah" ?

Another thing is, people teach people how to treat them.
So another big peeve of mine is some of the folks that own and use "tactical knives".
The knives are what they are, not my thing, but fine if they are yours.
My peeve is the folks acting like Bruce Lee on Meth using the damn things.

They cannot ease one out of a pocket , and open it, being civil, polite, respectful of office settings, clients and co-workers, use it, and put it back like a normal mature human being.

Oh no.
They have to "whip that sucker out fast" and...
Some workplaces did in fact make these knives "restricted" in work places because clients and co workers complained about how the owners used them.
Oh, and they spent too much time online with "tactical knife interactions on websites, and forums on company time".

Tack-Tickle taught folks how to treat them. It is their fault , and nobody else's.

Immature actions of some, caused a problem for everyone , including the mature , responsible adults that had tactical knives, with one hand opening, assisted opening, and locking blades.

Like gun owners, some knife owners do more harm and give those against use, ammunition to use against us.

So we have folks leaving restricted knives at home, and one "tool" they can have in the workplace or campus is a Micra.

Since I have some experiences and observations, let me continue with this Micra and what I have done with it, and what it is capable of, since I have been there , done that, and assisted others.

Go snag some gauze bandage ( Kerlix) your knife, bandage scissors, scissors period, SAK with scissors, or Micra.
If you have a old T shirt, and pair of old pants, put back for rags, snag them too.
Oh, got any electrical tape, masking tape, even cellophane tape, get it as well.

Let us say one has serious hit while at work or school, or enroute.
Tornado blew out windows, or somesuch,

Give me electrical tape and anything from tissue paper, to paper towels, to clothing ,(T shirt) and I will make a damn fine expedient bandage.

Gauze is difficult to cut with a knife. Bandage scissors work great. Bandage scissors work great to cut a pants leg to get to a wound.

So do SAK Scissors, and Micra Scissors.

Knives are more difficult, with the small pen knives having an advantage due to blade size and geometry.

First do no harm
applies to first responders and professionals, and then victims, clients, patients...

You had better know how to use that tactical knife, in cutting off a pants leg, as you do not want to do more harm to someone.

Micra, might be the better tool, especially if this is what you have, or only allowed to have.
Yes, it will cut blue jeans material , and cloth, and even gauze for medical needs.

Hence the reason often times a Micra is part of a first aid kit, along with a SAK Classic SD, in addition to bandage scissors.

Besides the scissors the other tools come in handy as well.

THANK THE LORD ABOVE SOMEBODY PUT INTO WORDS WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING!!!!

Knife and gun owners are very often their own worst enemy.

This latest brewha over the assisted opening knives is alot to blame on the some of the owners of these knives. Imature young mall ninja wannabes flashing these knives, being "cool' by flicking them open at inappropriate times and locations. The assisted opening knives become the James Dean switchblade of our day. Just a few ill manored punks can ruin it for lots of innocent people. And I do not use the term "punks" without thought.

Thank you Steve!!!

God bless all.

So do SAK Scissors, and Micra Scissors.

Maybe. But my old Micra, the scissors joint got too loose to cut very well after a couple months (and of course the pivot doesn't have a screw head or anything like that). Victorinox SAK, the same. Wegner SAK, the same. Cheapie Chinese knockoff SAK, obviously never cut in the first place.

Scissors of all sizes tend to do that on me, the big ones just take a little longer. I think the only ones that lasted longer than a year are the crazy Cutco shears I still have from one summer as a salesman. Terrible and crappy company, but these scissors are unkillable.

Just remember what's on your key ring if you're planning on air travel. The good folks at TSA confiscated my Micra. Must have been that big blade that had them spooked.
