I have had it with this press! It will index like it should 10-15 times and then start short stroking. I replaced the nylon ratchet piece and it didn't help one bit, adjusted the adjustment screw, cussed it a while, took it all apart and tried it all again............. no luck so I cussed it some more! I ended up taking the hex rod out and loading some rounds indexing it by hand, I guess Dillon has spoiled me! I did notice the nylon ratchet fits tight but the hex rod doesn't fit the piece that goes through shell plate very tight and I think it may be binding there and causing the screw up. I am just before taking my Mini-14 to this thing.

Hi Cottinmouth,Make sure the plastic square is in the right way.Clean and DON'T lube anything.Lightly apply light oil to ram.Hope this helps,I have loaded thousands of rounds without any issues when this is done.

cottonmouth, I used to cuss at my Pro 1000 too 15 years ago, but not anymore.:D You may have worn parts issue and/or adjustment issues. Is the press new, used/old, damaged? If it is new, your press should have come with a small plastic bag with replacement nylon gears and other small shell plate carrier parts. If it is used/old, especially if damaged, you may need to buy some parts.

If your shell plate is not indexing fully to each station even after checking/replacing the worn nylon gear/lubing the hex rod/adjusting the timing, you may not have reassembled the shell plate carrier properly. With hex rod properly lubed (I use a few drops of motor oil on my finger tip to coat the hex rod), your nylon gear should last several tens of thousand cycles.

This guy has a comprehensive 9 part video on Pro 1000 and you could watch to see if your shell plate was assembled/adjusted properly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzaPXj4g8D0&feature=related

cottonmouth,
You might have worn parts in your 3 hole turret press. If that's true you can buy the 4 hole upgrade kit for less money than it would cost you to replace the 3 hole turret parts and you get the advantage of the newer design of the 4 hole turret press. The kit comes with the top plate, a 4 hole turret, a new auto-index rod w/nylon ratchet and rod clamp. You can see it on This Page on the Lee site. The Turret Upgrade Kit is only $14.49 from Midway USA.

Just shot in the dark suggestion...

Are you referring to the Pro1000 or Deluxe Turret? For indexing adjustment, the turret has no "adjustment screw", only turning of the square shaft rod with a 1/4" wrench while holding the turret. It is pretty easy to get the indexing right where you need it. The turret momentum is a factor, so I don't get carried away and I try to have a consistent, smooth stroke. I use Remington DriLube on the turret surfaces, but the fit between indexing bumps is pretty easy going.

The pro 1000 is simple to use...I've loaded thousands of rounds with mine. You should be able to figure it out.

If you used excessive force at any time, it is possible to warp the whole carrier assembly. I did it when I first got mine and it drove me nuts.

Alright, I figured it out! It's the metal piece that the shell plate screws to. It is eigther the wrong one or it has worn out and causing the hex rod to bind enough to keep it from indexing. So.......... I figured since it was messed up anyhow I could beat the crap out of it/adjust it back into tollerances! LOL A few wacks with a good hammer and it she's working like a dream. Now at least I know what part to get now. Thanks for all the help fellers!
