I know that 38spl dies can be used for 357mag but is the opppsote true? A friend of mine just bought 357mag dies and the #1 shell plate for a Lee Pro 1000. Can I use these dies for reloading 38spl or will it be better to just buy the 38spl set?

On Lee's website they show a part #90510 with this 38 Special (Can be used to load MAGNUM cases) and then they have
#90511 357 Magnum (Can be used to load MAGNUM cases)

I would think that it would just be a matter of adjusting the dies for the different case lengths just want to be sure so I don't screw up my reloading Buddy's dies.

Lee makes a set for .357 Mag/.357 Maximum, and a set for .38 Spl/.357 Mag. The first set will not do .38 Spl.

A couple of companies make .357 specific dies as well as .38/.357 dies. The .357 specific dies will not do .38 Spl.

I tried to tell him that :cuss: he said they will work :banghead: I said if that was the case why would they have different part #s.

Run a sized .38 case into the seater crimper die by hand. If it wont touch the crimping ledge in the die with about 3/16 to 1/4" sticking out, it won't work.

I have a set of Lee .357 dies. When I use them to load .38 the only problem I have is the expander. I use a 9mm expander die to activate my powder measure.

When I set up for my 38/357 Short Barrel reloading project, I updated my Lee die set ups. This was at the same time I updated the (standard) Lee Turret I have with the 4-hole configuration and the Safety Prime....

At any rate, I did create two different die sets / turrets using the standard 38 / 357 dies, and I added a 38/357 FCD to each one. (This configuration, of course, allowed for separate seating and crimping.) I even got in a set of 357/357Max dies to experiment with the possibility of more complete 357 resizing. And, I tried using a S-C die instead of the FCD in the #4 position.

Overall, I found that eliminating the the (re)adjustments for the die setting differences by having separate setups was well worth the difference. Yes, one can use the Hornady(?) shim, but one also has to do additional tweaking re the PTED setup in changing out--at least I did.

I've also found that, only insofar as crimping goes, the FCD die is easier to set up for crimp-only than the S-C die tweaked to crimp only in the #4 position. FWIW, the post-sizing issues with the FCD come in only if my bullets are out of spec.

Using the 357Max die for "better" 357 resizing really didn't matter much, except for the bulging I seem to get if I run 231 at high levels--and even then, its benefit was marginal. (An aside--before the winter is over, I do plan on trimming both cartridge cases to get uniformity.)

In the comments so far, I have to admit I am bemused by Jim147's need to shift to a 9mm ED when loading 38 Special--I don't see why.

I too was recently perplexed at Lee's part number system and their 38 special dies.

I learned Lee part #90510 will load 38 special and 357 magnum.

Lee part #90511 will load 357 magnum and 357 maximum, not 38 special.

When I ordered set #90510 it actually came in the same plastic box as my 4 die 9mm set, which made me go hmmmm. And the loading data/die setup instructions clearly said 38 special, I had to read more to learn they will do 357 magnum.

If you already have a set of dies and are not sure, look at the loading data/die instructions. At the top, near the barcode, it should say "Lee" and below that "Reloading Die" and just below that should be the lee part number, either 90510, or 90511.

If you only have the die and are not sure, here are the stampings on my 38/357 mag dies for you to compare to. Sizer/deprimer "Lee-38/357 A9".
Powder through expander "Lee-38SPL-L8". Seating/crimp "Lee 38 SPL-H8".

Hope this helped.

*EDIT*

I forgot about their 4 die set, its part #90964. This set does 38 special and 357 magnum.

Lee doesn't make a 4 die set for 357 magnum and maximum, AFAIK.

I called Lee this AM they verified what Walkalong said. I talked to my Bud he is tight with the Gun shop he bought the dies at. I just got back from there and they exchanged the 357 dies for the 38 spl all is well. :)
