I just bought a savage 338 lapua magnum. Got all my reloading stff and thought i was ready. Got ready to prime so i checked the lee shell holder with my cartridge before slipping it into the auto primer. Fit perfect. I then slid it into auto primer and then tried to insert cartridge and the darn cartridge wont slid in. Uggh. Anyone un into this. Sheesh. I need to prime my new catridge but now it looks like i will have to find another primer mechinism fot this.

I found this out too, the hard way. I just prime them on my press. It takes longer, but I don't have that much brass that won't fit. Just the one caliber. I don't known if a newer Lee will work, Mine are both the old models one is set up for small primers and one for large.

Wow good to know. Was glad it was just not me. I got a lyman press with the turrent. It came with the primer assembly but i never installed it. Guess i need to figure it out. I wonder if the new auto bench one works. Sounds like you and i have the same model. I have had mine for years. Sure appreciate the cooment

How much does it miss being inserted? Once had the same problem and realized the new lee auto prime shell hold was just a couple of thousands thick. A little grinding and it was good to go.

If I understand your issue properly...

The throat on some Auto Primes is to tight for some cases so opening it up with a Dremel Tool is needed. Lee would do this for you at one time but most find it doable at home.

Mine would not allow 300 Weatherby cases in until I opened it up a little. I just ground off a few thousands of the "U" shaped opening of the tool allowing the case to slide into the shell holder.

I had that problem with the 300 WSM as well, a little bit of material removed on the inside sides/back of top flange of the tool base with the Demmel and a drum sander attachment allowed it to work. The other way is to use your standard shell holder in a ram prime unit on your press. That is what I do with the 500 S&W brass I reprime.

I got this sorted out. Witchhunter had it right. I went ahead and instaaled the lyman primer gadget to the press and all good not worth buying more stuff. And i do have the right shell holder type. I atuaaly all the other 20 and they all work fine. Mist be the 338 is much larger and just wont allow it to insert. Old hand primer so that may be the reason. The lyman add on primer works fine though. Thanks witch hunter.
