About 3 years a good friend gave me a no. 5 jungle carbine that someone had put a synthetic stock. Overall the gun was in great condition with the exception of the bore which looked like a sewer pipe. I bought some factory ammo and took it to the range and was really disappointed with my groups. I got some J & B bore paste and went to work. I lost count of the number of brushes I wore out, but I could feel the difference. I took it back to the range and the groups were better, but nothing to brag about. Then I got a lee loader and bought some powder, primers, bullets and other essential stuff. My groups were getting smaller, but I thought I could do better. I mounted a low power scope and the groups stayed about the same. I started trying different bullets/brass/powder. IMR 4064 is the ticket as well as once fired brass.
The other day I was shooting factory ammo as I have a lot and the groups were about 3 to 5 inches at 100 yds. off the bench. When I switched to my reloads suddenly I was almost moa. I had 4 rounds under an inch and one opened up to about an inch and a half. Last year I loaded some remington 180 bullets and the first 2 shots went thru the same hole at 50 yds. I thought this was a fluke, but I've done it again.
For some reason the factory ammo was shooting about 8" to the right and high.
Who says milsurp rifles can't be accurate?
