I notice that you haven't commented on the other responses

i didn't see much sense in commenting on your preference of sighting arrangement. i prefer the Enfield, you prefer the Garrand setup. it's just a style choice of which works better.

my favored Enfield would be one chambered in 6.5x55mm...to hit further with less recoil

There's a lot of grand garand love 'round these parts. But the Enfield has some real nice qualities.

If you could get a good garand for Under $400 I would call it the better rifle.

Both are good and if I had one I wouldn't feel under armed. Col. Jeff Cooper talked about this subject indirectly in his book when discussing the Scout concept as the all around rifle. If things get bad, it is very unlikely you are ever going to be having a massive shootout requiring massive firepower. In fact, if you started finding that situation to develop, leaving would be the priority. Actually, leaving in general is a better idea than shooting. More than likely with a rifle, you would be shooting from a hidden position at far off targets taking a few shots and then moving on. This is also where having a pistol as a back up becomes handy.

I appreciate everyone's posts. It's good to hear so many objective and subjective opinions on the matter.

I have a garand and I think it's terrific. As it's not a collector item, I have the "scout rail" replacing the rear handguard, and I swapped out the standard op rod latch for a Holbrook device. (This gadget makes the M1 act like a M1A, requiring an op-rod handle pull to chamber 1st round and defeating automatic clip ejection after 8th round. Also lets you easily insert 2 rds, or some other less than full quantity, without modified clips.)

As I'm not really using it as a battle rifle, I find not having to search the tall grass for the clips is better... :)

I am just curious. I inherited both and am deciding which one to feed and maybe find a twin.
