Talking to a friend today who also cast his own Lead bullets & he got a new Lee 250gr. REAL bullet mold for his .50 Encore & he told me that he was using Lee liquid Alox lube for them since they worked for his other guns ".44 mag, .357 mag, .30-30, & so on."

My question is, would this be an OK lube for a muzzleloader?

With muzzleloaders bullet lube is primarily used to keep the fouling soft. Although I've heard of others using Alox lube I can't see how it would benefit a BP firearm.

liquid alox is great stuff.

for smokeless shooting.

Dont use it for black powder as one of the ingredients is mineral spirits(petroleum). Petroleum does not go good with black powder. Gums up the inside of the barrel. Will cause more fowling and more cleaning between shots. i cast my own also, i just use bore butter on the bullets. Lube 2000 and crisco can work just as good. But stay away from anything that deals with petroleum. Same way you would not use bore butter or crisco when shooting smokeless loads. you have to stay away from using petroleum based products for shooting black powder.

Thanx guys I thought I was right in assuming that it wasn't a great idea.

Well since he has some where around 200 of those bullets made up & lubed, would swabbing between shots help lessen the effects of the Alox lube?
I'm not sure since I've been using a mixture of Crisco & Bees Wax as a lube for my muzzleloaders including my C&B revolvers for almost 20 years.
