Ok i bought a lee R.E.A.L mold for my 50 cal. Going through my Lee reloading manual. Shows that you can use LLA to lube bullets for muzzle loading. HOWEVER when i got my mold yesterday i opened it up. AND for the heck of things i actually read the paper. NICE. the paper says to use muzzle loading lube on the bullet or shortening like crisco. SO my question. I have always had pretty good luck with lee liquid alox in center fire rifles and handguns. Has anyone used it for muzzle loading if so give me the feedback. Id love to start casting and lubing some bullets to get ready for the weekend. If anything i was thinking of double lubing the bullets. Cast on wednesday after work. Then tumble lube them. Then Tumble lube them on Thursday again. Then friday pack up everything so i can go out shooting on saturday. orrrrr

do i have to go find some lube quick.

This is going to be used in a 50 cal muzzleloader. Inline CVA Buckhorn

Lube

Hey there:
I guess there may not be a real big issue with that lube. It is more an accuarcy issue for me . I only use lube 1000. Any natural lube will work. The thing you want to stay away from is a lube that has "Petro" products in it.
Some may argue this but the old timers and accuracy nuts know best.
I never use a petro based lube on any parts of BP guns. That only makes you think you have protected that gun. The rust will come. Natural lubes will keep rust at bay, even in the barrel. The natural lubes will season that bore much like an old skillet. Thats what you want. If your lube will do that , then it should be fine.

Don't know about the paste wax, but I use a beeswax Crisco mix on my REAL bullets. I use 60% crisco to 40% beeswax. While the mix is still melted, I dip the bullets in it and the gives them a coat. Works well for me.

Scrat, did you try the Lee Liquid Alox?

I want to try loading some black powder .45 cartridges, and I have a big jar of Lee tumble lube bullets all ready to load. Just not sure if it's an appropriate lube or not. (maybe I should dip the finished cartridge noses in some tallow or grease?)

What about "grease cookies"? I've heard that term before but not familiar with it. Sounds like a thin disk of beeswax and tallow you put on the bullet base B4 loading.

Liquid Alox will NOT work with black powder!!! It will leave a gummy mess in your barrell that is durn near impossable to remove. Use a 50/50 mix of beeswax and Bore Butter. Melt in a double boiler and dip the bullets in, over the grease grooves, while melted. Place on wax paper to cool, repeat if needed to fill grooves.

Nope went with Bore butter instead my local gun shop had it in stock. Said forget with all the information i read on it. Funny thing if you look in the lee modern reloading book. Lee states he has used with success liquid alox. Then when i recieved the mold it stated to use a black powder lube.

The Bore Butter is a good lube, but is a little thin. By mixing it with bees wax it will hold onto the bullet grooves better.
