Lee Load Master Question

I've read so much feedback and the responses are a little vague, so I'm asking a very straight forward question.

I am buying a Lee Load master and planning to reload various pistol and rifle calibers (.38spl, .40sw, .223 & .270).

Lee supplies the Lee Pro Auto Disk powder measure when you order the Load Master press in a pistol caliber and the Lee Perfect Powder measure when you order it in a rifle caliber.

Which one of of these two powder measures would be better for me and why?

Thanks,
Mark

For pistols you need disk measure, no questions. It is accurate, but measures up to 1.57 cubical centimeter (or double of this with Lee double disk kit). This is enough to fill any of your pistol cases completely with powder. With double disk it is enough to drop any charge into .223 (1.87 cu cm). It is not enough to fill 270 (4.3 cu.cm) even with double disk kit.

I have a couple of Auto Disk's for/on my Lee Turret press. I load pistol calibers using them. I haven't had any problems throwing Bulls Eye, W231, Unique, AA#5, or Red Dot with the Auto Disk set up. The thing throws just a bit under/over what the conversion chart says it will depending on the powder and it dosen't vary more than .2gr with any of the listed powders IME. It is super easy to set up and use.

I also load .308, .270, 30-06, 22-250 and 30-30 on that press BUT.... I hand weigh each charge as most of them are hunting rifles and I'm looking for max accuracy/performance out of them.

I tried to load some .223 for my AR up - ONCE - using the "double disk" deal but IMR 4064 (or any other stick powders) don't meter worth a crap out of an Auto Disk. It would probally do great with sperical/ball powders if you can get enough capacity out of the disk's for the cartridge your trying to load.

I've never used the perfect powder measure before, I'm sorry that I can't giver any prespective on it's use.

You definitely want the Autodisk for loading pistol calibers--so get a pistol die package. If you don't get it with the package, add an Adjustable Charge Bar and make sure the measure is the "Pro" model.

For the rifle reloading, you might get by with a double-disk kit, etc., on the Pro Auto Disk--at least for .223. Otherwise, you need the PPM if you plan on doing on-press powder charging. However, see the loadmastervideos.com forum for better discussions on how people use their Load-Masters for rifle bottleneck reloading.

FWIW--I am a load-master owner / user, but I load only handgun cartridges on it so far. I have sorted out .223 loading on my (standard) updated Lee Turret, but have no need / interest in progressive reloading of rifle cartridges yet....
