Okay, rookie here.
I have the Lee Challenger press.
Instructions for the shellholder just shows the guy holding it on top of the press. How in the world does the "shell holder retainer" work?

Thanks in advance! I'm looking forward to chat'n with ya'all on here.

I think it would just snap into the press ram. Try it with the bottom of the shell holder about 1/4 inch below the top of the ram.

The pic below may make you think there is already a shell holder on there, but the ram is solid. The retainer 'clip' wraps around the solid ram; can't see what good it does. Now how do I get that shell holder installed?

I'm probably going to be VERY embarassed when I find out.

Ahhhh crap! Figured it out.

My lee .223 dies came with the CORRECT shell holder. I've been trying to start with redding .45 dies, while using the Auto-Primer shell holders set. I'll need to order a LEE shell holder for the .45 ACP.

I told you I'd be embarrased!

There should be a "nub" on the bottom of the shellholder that just slides into the recess in the ram.. might be the camera angle, but I don't see the "nub" there. It looks like an upside down "T" ... that loose piece hanging off the ram doesn't look right either... it's been years, but I recall the shellholders just sliding in and "snapping" into place in the ram on the old Lee 'O' press I used once.

Well, I'm not familiar with the Lee Challenger press, but it looks similar to my RCBS as far as the ram is concerned.

Your shellholder looks like its missing the bottom piece that locks into the ram with the retainer clip. Here's the shelholder type I'm thinking of:

Maybe your Challenger uses a different type of shellholder. The one in the above picture has been a "standard" since at least the 1960's.

Did you get the shellholder with your press in a complete kit?

grizz3000 is absolutely right - he was trying to use a shell holder for the Lee hand priming tools, which do NOT have the flange on the bottom to lock into a ram. And with the right shell holder, it will be perfectly obvious how it just snaps into place.

FWIW, I've found that RCBS shell holders work just fine in Lee presses (including the Challenger), and probably everybody else's "regular" holders do too, so if you have local access to another brand it would be worth trying. The only thing is that if you're using Lee instruction books they'll use Lee's shell holder numbers, which are NOT the same as RCBS's, and maybe not the same as anybody else's.

BTW, don't pitch that shaved shell holder. The Lee hand primers are outstanding tools, inexpensive, quick and with superb feel. When I'm loading on one of my single stage presses, I frequently use the hand priming tool instead of the one on the press. (It's much easier for me to dump 100 primers in the hand tool, shake, cover and start priming, than to stick single primers into the holder on a press.)

Wrangler,

Yes, the hand primer is great. I didn't even try priming with the press. You can really feel the primer seating correctly.

I loaded 100 rounds of 223 today. Took me a bit to get the die adjusted for the right bullet seat, but that's all part of the fun eh?

Here's what I'd do. 'Cause I did!

Grizz, buy a full set of standard shell holders and the Lee Autoprime. It primes on top of the press and you only need one set of shell holders, not two. Saves you money in the long run if yuou reload more than one cartridge.

1911guy,

I bought a Lee kit that came with the hand primer and all the hand primer shell holders.

I just ordered the full set of shell holders for the Lee press.

I'm good to go now.

Thanks for all your replies!

"I told you I'd be embarrased!"

Don't be. None of use were born knowing all this stuff. Takes time. Takes experience. But it comes. :)
