I am using the lee trimmer setup for 30-06. I noticed that on second reloading the web seems to be set back .040 to .050". This is once fired hxp brass reloaded once so fired twice. First trim with the lee tool gives a miidle of the road case length. Second time around it wants to cut .040 to .050 deeper thus a too short case is cut. Confirmed on once fired non reloaded cases that this is what is going on. Using a different trimmer I would have never noticed it.

I can only conclude that the web is setting back further towards the base of the cartridge.

My load is for the garand and is 45.0g IMR4064, CCI 34 primer, Remington PSP 165gr, seated .020 off lands and a light lee crimp. Primers flatten some and some neck sootiness. This is a light load

I do not feel the ridge/depression inside the case indicating incipient case failure.

Is this normal, safe to reload again?,any ideas as to what is going on?

My Lee trimmer indexes off the face of the lock stud, not off the case web.

The shell holder is the stop if your using this type of Lee http://www.thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=6328904&postcount=1
Case length gauge explained

Screw the case length gauge (the part with the pin that goes through the case) all the way into the cutter. There should also have been a shell holder with threads on the inside, that screws onto the lock stud. This locks the case into the shell holder/lock stud assembly.

Now, when you trim the unprimed case, the pin on the end of the case length gauge bottoms out against the lock stud when the correct case length is reached. There is a picture illustrating this on the back of the case length gauge package.

You should be able to load your cases untill the primer pockets loosen up. The Lee cutters only cut to one length, after the first trimming, very little should cut off on later trimmings. If you neck size, your trimming days will be far between.

Like some of the above posters said the case web has nothing to do with how the Lee trimmer works. The pilot goes through the primer flash hole and contacts the stud of the shell holder. All the peices of your puzzle are not there, help us help you to find them.

Web not moving

OK Guys thanks for all of the info.
I sat down and looked at the thing.
There is only one thing I can figure I must have done. My pea head was sure that the gauge mated to the trimmer was indexing off of the base of the web. I think I stuck it in a case and trimmed by hand, no backing of the lock stud was used. The thing did stop cutting once the shoulder of the gauge bottomed out on the web, short short case resulted. This erroneously confirmed my theory on how the thing worked. I mean it did bottom out on the web, eventually. I compared once shot brass, but I used the setup correctly to do this. I knew something was wrong but
I didnt know it was me!
Thank you for straightening me out. Saved a bunch of brass to boot.
