Left hand shooter - right hand flinter

Hey guys, I am considering buying my first flinter to keep my T/C caplocks company. My question, is it possible for a left handed shooter to have fun shooting a right handed flintlock? Would my face be a little close to the action, fire and flash etc?? There doesn't seem to be a lot of left handed flint guns out there. Thoughts?

First, wear safety glasses. Second, concentrate on the front sight blade and the target.

Do this and you won't even notice the flash.

I'm a lefty and I prefer a left handed lock by a large Margin, but as many have said before just look at something like a double barrel shotgun where there is a lock on both sides. It doesn't seem to bother to many folks then.

I'm a lefty too. I shoot RH flintlocks Right handed.

Take a look at the Lyman Great Plains Rifle, it comes in Lefty and it comes in flint, and it comes in .50 or .54.

My son in law is lefty, he learned to shoot with one of my rifles (right handed) once I saw he liked shooting I built him a left handed rifle. He never got used to shooting a rifle with the lock on the left side and still shoots a right handed rifle. I have seen rifles built for lefties with the lock on the right side also. If you feel any powder burns on your face with any flint, you are doing things wrong. As 4v50 Gary said, you should never see the flash or smoke from the pan. If you do again you are doing things wrong. Good luck and good shooting

Curiosity questions.

Do you lefties have a dominat left eye as most right hand shooters have a dominat right eye, or does one learn to shoot with both eyes open.
I have never been able to train my self to leave both eyes open while shooting hand guns or rifles. Have tried the blacked out left lens on the glasses but did not find it mattered much.

A friends son, many years ago, had a problem shooting until his father discovered he had a dominat left eye, he was closing his right, he was right handed. He trained the boy to shoot left handed and today the man is an expert hunter and shooter.

I am one of those backward guys. Right hander that shoots left handed, its always worked for me. Some will say you should retrain yourself but again shooting left is more comfortable to me. I prefer right handed guns though.

umc180gr,No problem since Double Guns have a Lock on each side there is little chance of the priming flashing towards you.

If the rifle is properly vented, and you use a proper amount of priming powder, you'll never have any issues. The best competition shooter I've ever met shoots a right-handed flint rifle, and he's left handed.

I am a lefty and have been shooting RH rocklocks over 50 years, never a problem for me.
