Will it be legal to attach a suppressor to the Beretta CX4, or will that be a violation of the law regarding flash hiders on "assault weapons"? I know that suppressors can be put on certain semi-autos with detachable magazines (e.g. Ruger 10/22).

I suspect the answer to my question is "No," but I get so confused by the law that I need help understanding why.

Thanks

Not legal.

As i recall, the Beretta CX4 has a pistol grip--the threads for attaching the suppressor would be one evil feature too many. The 10/22 can have a suppressor mounted because they (as a general rule) lack a pistol grip... a 10/22 with a pistol grip could not legally accept a suppressor. On the other hand, you could have something with a pistol grip and a fixed magazine, and be fine.

So the BATF&E now considers the CX4 stock as a pistol grip? I hadn't heard about that. Is this an opinion only related to the CX4, or does it apply to the HK carbines as well? If so, then it seems the companies would dispense with the thumbhole looking stocks and employ a more traditional pistolgrip stock. It is puzzling that Beretta would be allow to import the CX4 if it has a pistolgrip. Are they made in the US?

If it is regulated the same way as the USC it would be legal to have the barrel turned down to SBR length.

So its a threaded barrel thats an evil feature?

So if someone could come up with a way to attach a surpressor without needing a threaded barrel they would be in the clear? (assuming they payed the tax on the surpressor of course).

Surpressors are a Class III device so the end of the AWB will have no effect on them.

I'm just thinking it would be cool to be able to put a Surpressor on a rifle that doesn't have a threaded barrel (so that way you could surpress a postban rifle, if it is indeed the threads that are the preban feature).

As for waiting until Sept '04 ... I ain't holdin' my breath

according to the "AWB" only preban rifles can have suppressors (Flashhiders)
so post 9/2004 it might be possible for a non MIL/LEO to legally attach a can to a CX4 Storm

there is a MIL/LEO factory can:

Beretta – Gerry Smith____________________________
Introduction to the Beretta CX4 Patrol Carbine

The Beretta CX4 is the first true pistol caliber patrol carbine. Its purpose is to supplement an officer’s sidearm with an effective weapon that is easy to carry, easy to deploy, non-offensive to the public, and compatible with the ammunition already carried for the officer’s primary sidearm. The first phase of this class will be a basic armorer’s course introducing the students to the functionality and design of the CX4. The second phase will be live-fire tactical training with static and dynamic drills to emphasize proper technique and tactical application out to 100 yards. Beretta CX4’s will be provided for use in the class.
