I live in Connecticut where our recent law prohibits a semi auto rifle with a detachable magazine and ONE "bad" feature. As this includes pistol grips and "flash suppressors", it truly restricts any new purchases.

I am trying to figure out if there exist any semi auto rifles in .223 or .308 without a pistol grip or flash suppressor. I'd like to be able to use my existing evil AR and M1a mags.

Springfield's manual calls the metal thingy at the end of the barrel a "flash suppressor," so regardless of actual functionality, i would expect it a tough argument to claim it's either a compensator or decorative.

Any suggestions? Or should I just go to my safe and love the one(s) I'm with?

Veprs are (or were) available without any evil features, in both 223 and 308...

Mini 14 ranch rifle in .223, although you wouldn't be able to use your existing mags.

Saiga in it's sporting configuration in .308, also need some mags though.

Thanks. I guess the good news with a Mini14 is I wouldn't have any confusion about when I bought mags. Just can't bring any 11+ rounds mags into CTo

The Kel-Tec SU-16 family would meet the requirements, and let you use your existing AR-15 mags.

it seems like the only way they could palm off neutered semi autos is when there are neutered gun owners

Springfield makes a California compliant M1a, that replaces the hider with a brake. If your laws are similar, it should work.

The old HK SL6 or 630 should be legal for you. Mags are proprietary and never were available in more than 10 rounds. It hasn't been imported since the 1980s, though.

LRB Arms recently came out with what they call an LRB Sporter.

Built using their M14SA receiver, and specifically for states that have laws in place such as yours.

There is nothing at the muzzle, so no issues with "Is that MB/FH legal or not?"

You *could* try a bull.barrel that does not have a flash hider or maybe monsterman grips They are made in Cali to get around thier gun laws. I dont know about the laws where you are, just some things ive seen done in Cali

I'd love the ones you have instead of seeking out neutered versions. Can't you buy any upper you want to put on your existing AR lower. If you really like military style rifles and want to add more I suggest a Ryder truck.

the M1 garand is available in 308 from CMP. it's a pain to get one from them but probably no more so than Connecticut already makes it nowadays.

8 round capacity
no pistol grip/thumbhole
no flash hider/muzzle break
there is a bayonet lug, not sure if those are banned in CT or not.
costs around $1000 but it's essentially an M1a that weighs about a pound more that feeds from the top and only comes with one capacity(8 rounds)

can't use mags you've got but it'll use the ammo you've got.

If I were in that situation and moving out of state weren't an option, I'd simply go into a local gun shop and ask them what my options are. Chances are they'll know exactly what's legal and what isn't since they probably can't sell you anything that's not legal in the state.

I think I'd look into finding an SKS in great shape even if you have to cut the bayonet lug off. Get a bunch of stripper clips and forget about magazines.
