Legal question about my AR nd barrel length

So now that the ban is over I want to un-neuter my Bushy M4A3. The only gunsmith around my area that I could find is about 45 mins away and will charge about $200 to replace the muzzle brake with a threaded flash hider and replace the front sight post housing. I can get a complete barrel assembly from Bushmaster for like $200 so I'm just gonna go that way. Now, when I bought the M4 I bought the one with the contoured barrel for an M203 I'll never own. I plan on keeping that as it is aesthetically pleasing to me. I do not, however, want the 2.5" long flash hider. I want my rifle to look completely mil-spec. So can I register it with the ATF as an AOW? If so, does anyone know how I would do that and how much it would cost? Thanks guys

I think you mean SBR, since you want you AR to have a barrel shorter than 16 inches. Basically a 14 inch barrel with out the flash hider thing bringing the length back up to 16 inches.

I believe it will cost you a $200 tax stamp to register your rifle as a SBR. But other than that, I can't help you.

If you want to do a barrel + muzzle device of less then 16" you need to register the weapon as a SBR with the ATF. If you don't want to deal with them, your options are either a 14.5" barrel with a phantom or vortex, or a 16" barrel with an A2. Check out www.cmmginc.com. My choice would be to have the barrel cut down to 15" By your gunsmith and then have a conventional (M4 standard birdcage with closed slots on the bottom) flash hider pinned & welded in place. This would be a mere 1/2" longer than a true M4 and would still be legal. IIRC, an M4 with flash suppressor has a 15.5" total barrel length. For that extra half an inch, is it worth the extra $200 and hassle?

Seriously though..I'd go for the same thing as Badger suggested. No use getting the govt involved in getting a tax stamp just to have a shorter barrel.
